On July 5, 2026, the space probe flew within 6.2 miles (10 km) of the asteroid and sent back the image above. The asteroid appears to be what astronomers call a contact binary, or 2 asteroids stuck together. Just days earlier, the Chinese space agency also made a flyby of a different asteroid, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/469219_Kamo%CA%BBoalewa\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">2016 HO3 Kamo\u2019oalewa<\/a>. On July 2, 2026, China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/20260706\/eb8cbec6dfc94a0c84a24e6940334f1d\/c.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Tianwen-2<\/a> probe flew past asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/469219_Kamo%CA%BBoalewa\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Kamo\u2019oalewa<\/a> from a distance of just 12.5 miles (20 km). Then on July 5, 2026, Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxa.jp\/press\/2026\/07\/20260706-3_j.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hayabusa2<\/a> flew past asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/98943_Torifune\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Torifune<\/a> from a mere 6.2 miles (10 km) distant.<\/p>\n<p>Both space agencies caught images of the asteroids. Kamo\u2019oalewa might be a chunk of the moon ejected in a giant impact. And Torifune revealed itself to be two rubble piles joined together, or what astronomers call a contact binary.<\/p>\n<p>Flyby of asteroid Kamo\u2019oalewa<\/p>\n<p>On July 6, 2026, the China National Space Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/20260706\/eb8cbec6dfc94a0c84a24e6940334f1d\/c.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>: <\/p>\n<p>The Tianwen-2 probe has arrived at its target asteroid and begun scientific exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Tianwen-2\u2019s target is the asteroid Kamo\u2019oalewa, which is a near-Earth asteroid. The asteroid has a strange orbit that keeps it in unison with Earth. This resonant orbit makes it a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quasi-satellite\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">quasi-satellite<\/a> of Earth. A <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/asteroid-kamooalewa-blasted-from-the-moon-lunar-crater-giordano-bruno\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">2024 study<\/a> showed Kamo\u2019oalewa might have once been a part of the moon that blasted off during an impact that formed the lunar crater <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giordano_Bruno_(crater)\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Giordano Bruno<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s mission to the asteroid began back on May 29, 2025, with the launch of Tianwen-2. After a journey of what the space agency called about 400 days and 1 billion kilometers (621 million miles), Tianwen-2 will now: <\/p>\n<p>\u2026 conduct more detailed scientific explorations to obtain information on the asteroid\u2019s shape, material composition, and internal structure, providing support for preparations for sampling.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/China-asteroid-flyby-July-2-2026.jpg\" alt=\"Rocky and irregular shaped body on a black background.\" width=\"592\" height=\"611\" class=\"size-full wp-image-551548\"  \/>The China National Space Administration said on July 6, 2026, that it had recently captured this image of the asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/469219_Kamo%CA%BBoalewa\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Kamo\u2019oalewa<\/a>. The mission launched to space in December 2014. At that time, its target was the asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/asteroid-ryugu-organic-compounds-amino-acids-hayabusa-2\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ryugu<\/a>. In 2020, Hayabusa2 rendezvoused with Ryugu and took samples that it sent back to Earth. Analysis of the samples show they are rich in primitive organic material.<\/p>\n<p>After Ryugu, JAXA sent the Hayabusa2 probe on an extended mission to Torifune. The probe arrived at 18:30 Japan Standard Time on July 5, 2026. Hayabusa2 made several observations during its flyby. JAXA is still acquiring this data, so expect more revelations about the asteroid to come!<\/p>\n<p>But Hayabusa2\u2019s extended mission is not over. After a couple swings past Earth, the space probe is headed for the tiny asteroid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_KY26\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">1998 KY26<\/a>. The asteroid is just 11 meters (36 feet) in diameter. Hayabusa2 should arrive at the asteroid in 2031.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Japanese and Chinese space agencies both completed asteroid flybys in early July, 2026.
