Look, we’ve all been wondering. How do the Minions reproduce? They all have male names, so is it asexual reproduction, like with spores? Maybe some Minions change their sex, like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. Maybe they split in half, amoeba-style. Minion co-creator and voice actor Pierre Coffin has a far more intriguing proposal. Speaking to Polygon, Coffin suggested that Minions have existed since the dawn of time. Like matter, Minions cannot be created nor destroyed (which kind of takes the oomph out of the Minions & Monsters final act, non?). What’s more, they are responsible for all life on earth.

“It’s a question that we’ve all asked ourselves,” Coffin said, “at a highly creative level.” Coffin explained that he had an idea to give a complete origin of the Minions species as the credits sequence to Minions and Monsters. “When we did the first Minion movie, the opening credits, they started off as little yellow cells,” Coffin said. “I had another idea for the opening credits of this movie. His plan was to show the Big Bang, and from it emerge “little yellow dots.” These yellow dots would hop from planet to planet, until eventually landing on earth. “So, trying to say the origin of this whole thing, actually, is the Minons,” Coffin said.

An outer-space source for life on earth isn’t a new theory. Scientists have hypothesized tiny single-celled organisms floated through space, landed here, and populated the earth. It’s not the most popular theory, but it’s not the most crackypotty, either. Something had to cause life to spring forth from the primordial soup, why not these little yellow guys. The Minions doing a Prometheus to earth was eventually cut, however. Coffin said it got away from Minions & Monsters’ main focus: the magic of Da Movies.

Sign up for the Vulture Daily

An entertainment newsletter for the pop-culture obsessed.

Vox Media, LLC Terms and Privacy Notice
