LONDON \u2014 Legendary pop singer Bonnie Tyler<\/a>, best known for hits including \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart,\u201d has died after weeks in the hospital, her family said Thursday. She was 75.<\/p>\n

\u201cBonnie\u2019s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,\u201d a statement <\/a>said on her official social media accounts. <\/p>\n

The raspy-voiced Welsh singer gained global popularity in the 1970s and 1980s for her power ballads including \u201cHolding Out for a Hero\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s a Heartache.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June, Tyler emerged from a monthlong medically induced coma<\/a> after undergoing emergency surgery to treat a perforated intestine, her family said <\/a>at the time. She remained \u201cvery unwell\u201d and in intensive care, they said. <\/p>\n

Tyler\u2019s shows scheduled through August were canceled or postponed as a result. <\/p>\n

\u201cBonnie was unique, she was a one-off, great sense of humor, a stunning voice and great stage presence,\u201d her representative and music executive Judd Lander said in a statement Thursday. \u201cThe world has lost one hell of a great talent!\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Keir Starmer said the U.K. prime minister was \u201csaddened\u201d to hear about her death, labelling her \u201cone of Britain\u2019s greatest recording artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAn iconic figure, she leaves behind a catalogue of music … which continues to touch lives, flood dance floors and fill karaoke booths,\u201d a Downing Street spokesman said.<\/p>\n

The daughter of a Welsh coal miner, Tyler was born \u2014 as Gaynor Hopkins \u2014 in public housing with an outside toilet in Skewen, Wales, about seven miles outside Swansea. <\/p>\n

Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, called Tyler a \u201cWelsh music icon\u201d and said she was sad to hear of her death, in a post <\/a>on X.<\/p>\n

She found global fame and lived with her husband, Robert Sullivan, in Faro, a city in southern Portugal.<\/p>\n

She was dubbed \u201cthe female Rod Stewart\u201d because of her distinctive gritty voice. Her career took off in the 1980s when she teamed up with producer Jim Steinman, who wrote her biggest hits, \u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart\u201d and \u201cHolding Out for a Hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTotal Eclipse of the Heart,\u201d came out in 1983 and made it to No. 1 on both the U.S. and U.K. charts. The bombastic ballad then became a karaoke anthem. It has had more that 1 billion streams, boosted by real eclipses in 2017 and 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never get tired of singing it,\u201d she once told BBC News<\/a>. \u201cI love it because everyone can\u2019t wait to sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
