Former Megadeth<\/a> bassist David Ellefson<\/a> says he views the legendary metal act without him\u00a0as \u201cDave Mustaine<\/a>\u2019s \u201csolo band.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment came in an interview with SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk while discussing the potential of rejoining Megadeth.<\/p>\n

Ellefson said (as transcribed by Blabbermouth<\/a>), \u201cI never closed that door to that thing\u2026 When Dave put the group back together, when he said he wanted to work again in 2004, I said the same thing. \u2018Cause there was this talk of, \u2018Should we do the Rust in Peace reunion?\u2019 And that didn\u2019t happen, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cBut I said to Dave in 2004, which was the first time trying to put it back together as a band, which really kind of turned out to be more of a solo\u2026 When I\u2019m not in Megadeth, I always look at it like it\u2019s Dave\u2019s solo band. That\u2019s just how I look at it. And not that it\u2019s good, bad or otherwise; it\u2019s just different. To me, it just is a different feel than the Megadeth of Ellefson and Mustaine together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it\u2019s me and Dave, that is a version of Megadeth \u2014 it\u2019s the O.G. version from the \u201980s through the \u201990s, and then revisited again in \u2014 what? \u2014 2010 through 2021. There\u2019s just a different sound to it. So it is what it is. It carries on. And it\u2019s fine with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Ellefson has shared such a belief. In February of 2026, he shared a review of the final Megadeth album on his podcast<\/a>, stating he felt it sounded more like a Mustaine solo record than proper Megadeth.<\/p>\n

The comments come in the wake of continued acrimony between Ellefson and Mustaine following the former\u2019s ouster from Megadeth in 2021<\/a> after the exposure of the bassist\u2019s \u201cembarrassing\u201d online sexual encounter with a young woman. Earlier this year, Mustaine said he didn\u2019t plan on welcoming classic members<\/a> to the stage during Megadeth\u2019s ongoing farewell tour.<\/p>\n

Ellefson has since become a member<\/a> of veteran band Metal Church<\/a>, whose newest album Dead to Rights<\/a> released on April 10th. They are currently preparing for a North American tour with Armored Saint to kick off July 17th (get tickets here<\/a>).<\/p>\n
