{"id":536358,"date":"2026-07-11T13:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T13:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/536358\/"},"modified":"2026-07-11T13:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T13:11:10","slug":"end-of-an-era-what-is-the-future-of-british-tv-after-skys-itv-takeover-television-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/536358\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018End of an era\u2019: what is the future of British TV after Sky\u2019s ITV takeover? | Television industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Only five years ago a bullish ITV was riding high, trumpeting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2021\/dec\/22\/itv-can-toast-a-bumper-year-yet-investors-remain-reluctant?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biggest annual advertising haul in its history<\/a>, as the broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/mar\/03\/itv-to-take-on-netflix-amazon-and-disney-with-new-streaming-service\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pledged to become a national champion<\/a> in the battle against the US streamers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Now its chief executive, Carolyn McCall, has raised the white flag, arguing that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/jul\/06\/sky-owner-announces-16bn-takeover-of-itvs-broadcasting-arm\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut-price sale of its TV and streaming business to Sky<\/a> is the only route to survival as deep-pocketed companies such as Netflix and YouTube hoover up audiences and commercial revenues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This week\u2019s deal marks one of the biggest shake-ups in British TV history, ending the broadcaster\u2019s independence after 70 years. It also raises questions over feared further job cuts in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/feb\/07\/we-have-to-reset-britains-tv-industry-struggling-in-big-budget-streaming-era\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under-pressure sector<\/a>, the long-term fate of fan-favourite shows and the future viability of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/article\/2024\/aug\/30\/more-cuts-and-a-merger-with-channel-4-the-bbc-contemplates-its-radical-future\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly isolated and small-scale<\/a> Channel 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/britishskybroadcastinggroup\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sky<\/a> chief executive, Dana Strong, has already identified \u00a3200m in annual cost savings to be realised by the end of the third year after the deal closes, suggesting a \u201cminority\u201d will come from job duplication, mostly in corporate and commercial departments.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s Celebrity Traitors was a huge success, but the corporation is pushing through deep cuts. Photograph: Paul Chappells\/BBC\/Studio Lambert<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meanwhile, the BBC, under the new leadership of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/mar\/25\/matt-brittin-bbc-director-general-profile\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former Google boss Matt Brittin<\/a>, is pushing through its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/apr\/15\/bbc-cut-jobs-downsize-matt-brittin-tim-davie\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deepest cuts in 15 years<\/a>, shedding up to 2,000 staff in an effort to become fit for the digital age as British TV faces an existential crisis in the streaming era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt is the end of an era really,\u201d says Nick Manning, an independent media strategist at Encyclomedia. \u201cIt won\u2019t be long before the Americanisation of UK media is complete, the last bastions of Britishness are starting to fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt all comes down to audiences and funding. It has already happened in terms of audiences going to big US streamers and platforms, and the money is following. The changes we are seeing, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2018\/sep\/23\/comcast-30bn-bid-for-sky-what-does-it-mean#:~:text=Why%20has%20Comcast%20bid%20%C2%A3,and%20produces%20its%20own%20content.https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/feb\/27\/comcast-boss-brian-roberts-london-cab-driver-role-sky-bid\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sky being acquired by Comcast<\/a> and now ITV being bought, are essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Sky and ITV\u2019s combined share of UK television and streaming viewing was 17.7% in May, while YouTube stood at 18.6%, according to the UK ratings body Barb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Only the BBC remains larger than the US video company, although at 19.5% its lead is rapidly dwindling. Netflix, at 10.14%, is close to overtaking ITV\u2019s 11.2%, having cruised past Sky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/channelfive\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 5<\/a> and Channel 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">On Wednesday, Brittin publicly highlighted the looming predicament for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/channel4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4<\/a> \u2013 whose Barb audience share is only 5.79% \u2013 while confirming the two broadcasters were in talks about combining their streaming services to create a \u201csovereign platform\u201d to compete with the US companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIn the world of the ITV-Sky merger, Channel 4 looks very subscale,\u201d was Brittin\u2019s frank assessment at the culture select committee of MPs. \u201cAll of these mergers are driven by the need for scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>British YouTuber Angry Ginge in I\u2019m a Celebrity \u2026 Get Me Out of Here!, an ITV show.  Photograph: ITV\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Sky\u2019s takeover of ITV will account for about 74% of the traditional TV ad market \u2013 including digital sales on broadcasters\u2019 streaming services and third-party deals such as selling Channel 5\u2019s inventory \u2013 leaving Channel 4 a distant second player at 26%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The tie-up partners are banking on the competition regulator considering a much wider market definition, with the combined entity accounting for just more than 30% of overall video advertising, according to Enders Analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Either way a merger of rivals could severely affect an already stretched Channel 4, which is state owned but commercially funded, considering advertising accounted for 90% of its \u00a31.03bn revenues last year.<\/p>\n<p>A scene from ITV\u2019s Coronation Street. Photograph: ITV\/Danielle Baguley\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Channel 4 has fought off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2017\/mar\/28\/channel-4-will-not-be-sold-off-but-could-be-moved-out-of-london\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple privatisation attempts<\/a> by Conservative governments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2022\/apr\/04\/nadine-dorries-to-press-ahead-with-plan-to-privatise-channel-4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most recently in 2022<\/a>, and has been repeatedly forced to defend its independence as renewed talk of the need to look at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2009\/feb\/24\/carter-signals-channel4-auction\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">merger with BBC Studios<\/a> emerged after the announcement of the Sky-ITV talks in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The new Channel 4 chief executive, Priya Dogra, a former senior executive at Sky, has launched a comprehensive review, which is expected to result in job losses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/bbc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> is a bit of a Death Star of an organisation to try to partner with; they like a lot of sovereign power, but they are now probably the only game in town for Channel 4,\u201d says one senior TV industry executive, who has been involved in talks with the corporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe government, culture department and UK Government Investments [which manages the state\u2019s ownership of Channel 4] will be asking: \u2018What is the plan?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Channel 4\u2019s The Great Peep Show Christmas Bake Off. It can\u2019t just be to make better programmes and do well in the ad market any more. Channel 4 will have to do something radical in the next few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">ITV\u2019s decision to join forces with Sky and form, in the words of Strong, a \u201cBritish streaming champion\u201d, scotches the long-discussed dream of the three original public service broadcasters joining forces. The idea, which came close to fruition in 2009 under the name \u201cProject Kangaroo\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2009\/feb\/04\/project-kangaroo-blocked-by-competition-commission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before being blocked<\/a>, could have been transformative for the UK TV landscape, giving the UK PSBs a three-year headstart on Netflix in streaming.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-24\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a>Free newsletter | Every weekday<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-vf9hps\">Sign up to Business Today<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1r7my33\">Get set for the working day \u2013 we&#8217;ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1782306728_295_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"dcr-xiq31o\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"EmailSignup-skip-link-24\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-label=\"after newsletter promotion\" role=\"note\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">after newsletter promotion<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">McCall expressed her frustration this week about the fact ITV had been unable to progress the latest talks to create a joint venture \u201cbecause we all have such different business models\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">If Sky is successful in its takeover of ITV it means two of the UK\u2019s four nationwide public service broadcasters will be under the control of a US company, as Channel 5 is owned by Paramount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Sky\u2019s takeover has also raised questions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/dec\/14\/comcast-itv-public-service-broadcasting-channel-4-bbc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">future of national and regional news provision<\/a>, given it will own 20% of ITN \u2013 which produces news for ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 \u2013 as well as Sky News.<\/p>\n<p>ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall has been frustrated with progress on a broadcasting joint venture. Photograph: Leon Neal\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">However, there are also questions about the long-term future of British crown jewel TV programming such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale and hit reality series franchises such as I\u2019m A Celebrity \u2026 and Love Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The takeover did not include ITV Studios, one of the world\u2019s biggest production companies, which will remain as a standalone company listed on the London Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Sky has committed to spend at least \u00a32.1bn between 2028 and 2032 on the studios business, safeguarding the future of popular shows on free-to-air ITV for now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">However, there has been rampant merger and takeover activity in the content production industry in recent years, with executives already talking about ITV Studios as a prime takeover target once Sky and ITV have unpicked it from the broadcasting arm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">On Thursday, Paris-headquartered Banijay Group, maker of shows ranging from Peaky Blinders to Big Brother, completed its \u20ac4.4bn (\u00a33.8bn) merger with All3Media, the UK super-indie behind hits including The Traitors. The deal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/mar\/03\/banijay-group-to-form-38bn-television-super-indie-with-the-traitors-producers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first announced in March<\/a>, creates the world\u2019s largest independent production company, which will be run from London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Banijay and RedBird IMI, the owner of All3Media, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/apr\/28\/banijay-group-drafts-itv-bid-peaky-blinders-big-brother-producer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously held talks<\/a> with ITV over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/itv-redbird-imi-hold-early-stage-talks-merge-production-businesses-sources-say-2025-01-30\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential takeover<\/a> of ITV Studios.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours was grabbed from the BBC by Channel 5 and then axed from the channel. Photograph: Network Ten<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">While Strong stressed Sky was not planning to put ITV favourites into its subscription services, it cannot be sure it can keep the shows on the free-to-air channel beyond the five-year deal. It also cannot guarantee the motives of any new owner if ITV Studios is taken over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In 2007, the BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2007\/may\/18\/broadcasting.bbc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost Neighbours<\/a>, its daytime ratings banker for 21 years, to Channel 5, owned at the time by German broadcaster RTL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The soap was put out to bidders by Fremantle, the production group also owned by RTL, in which the stablemate Channel 5 triumphed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cNeighbours is a perfect analogy of what could happen,\u201d says Peter Fincham, a former senior executive at the BBC and ITV who is a co-chief executive of the production company Expectation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWhat will happen to shows like Coronation Street? No one can know the viewing patterns and habits in five years\u2019 time and the value [of a show on free-to air TV] or to a streamer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cITV Studios itself might be in different ownership, and it could be someone in direct competition. However intertwined they have been, the sentimental link between ITV Studios and ITV will have evaporated.
