Valley’s network includes the 341-bed acute care hospital; more than 50 primary, urgent, and specialty-care clinics; and almost 3,700 staff. It’s the largest nonprofit health care provider between Seattle and Tacoma.

Valley Medical Center & Clinics is ending its affiliation with UW Medicine at the end of the year, when a 15-year agreement that began in 2011 expires. Valley’s elected Board of Commissioners voted in December 2024 not to renew the agreement.

In a news release announcing the name change, Valley said the UW partnership helped strengthen collaboration and advance care for the communities Valley serves. As that affiliation concludes, Valley is embracing a future as Valley Medical Center & Clinics — a vibrant organization rooted in the strengths, relationships, and spirit that have defined it for nearly 80 years, the release said.

“As Washington state’s first and largest public hospital district, Valley has always belonged to the community we serve,” Jeannine Erickson Grinnell, CEO of Valley Medical Center & Clinics, said in the release. “Our new brand identity honors our history while reflecting who we have always been at our core: a compassionate, resilient, and dedicated team committed to caring for our community like family.”

Valley said its new logo symbolizes a belief embedded in Valley’s culture: Health care is delivered by people for people. Physicians, nurses, therapists, environmental-services teams, patient-access staff, support teams, volunteers, technicians, leaders, and countless others work together daily to provide high-quality, compassionate care, it added.

“Our greatest strength is not a building, a technology, or a brand affiliation,” Grinnell added. “Our greatest strength is in ‘WE’ — the extraordinary people who come together every day with a shared commitment to caring for our community.”

The new logo for Valley Medical Center & Clinics

Patients can expect the same high-quality care and services, Valley said, adding that its mission, services, providers, and dedication to clinical excellence remain unchanged.

Valley Medical Center & Clinics is an independent public-hospital district serving South King County and surrounding communities. Valley Medical Center, a nonprofit also known as Public Hospital District No. 1 of King County, is the oldest and largest public hospital district in the state, encompassing the cities of Kent, Renton, Tukwila, and portions of Auburn, Black Diamond, Covington, Federal Way, Maple Valley, Newcastle, and Seattle. The district does not extend into Pierce County but does have some patients from there. While the hospital is affiliated with UW Medicine, it is a standalone entity and staff are not UW employees.

Meanwhile, Valley early last year completed the first phase, 1A, of a new three-phase Cancer Center project estimated at roughly $60 million. Phases 1B and 2 are nearing completion and in planning, respectively.

Phase 1A, which included a new infusion and immunotherapy center, is located on the East Pavilion’s third floor.

Phase 1B will complete the third floor and was broken into two phases to allow Valley to prioritize resources on clinical care delivery areas first and the café area for patients, loved ones, and caregivers next. The clinical care areas are nearly complete and Valley will be holding a ribbon-cutting from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 20 to celebrate the opening of the new Oncology & Hematology Clinic, Multidisciplinary Clinic, Acute Symptom Management Clinic, Gynecologic Oncology Clinic, High Risk Screening & Genetics Clinic, and Supportive & Palliative Care Clinic, according to Liz Nolan, Valley’s chief communications officer.

Next, Valley will shift focus to Phase 2 for Radiation Oncology and café space. Timing is contingent on funding, but it’s continuing to plan for completion at the end of 2027, Nolan added.

This aerial view shows the Renton campus of Valley Medical Center & Clinics.
