He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 12 Jul 202612 Jul 2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/12\/us-senator-lindsey-graham-passes-away\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lindsey Graham<\/a>, a prominent Republican senator in the United States and a key ally of President Donald Trump, has \u2060died aged 71.<\/p>\n<p>Graham passed away on \u2060Saturday evening after a \u200cbrief and sudden illness, the communications director \u2060for his office \u2060said in \u2060a post \u2060on \u2060X early Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Graham\u2019s \u2060family appreciates prayers \u2060at this \u2060time and asks for privacy during this incredibly \u200cdifficult period,\u201d his office added.<\/p>\n<p>Graham was elected to the US Senate in 2002 and was re-elected in 2008, 2014 and 2020. In 1994, he served in \u2060the US House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Congress, for South Carolina\u2019s third congressional district.<\/p>\n<p>He recently served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. Graham also served as a member of \u200cthe Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.<\/p>\n<p>He was a strong supporter of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and had long pushed for military action against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGraham has consistently pushed for outcomes in the War on Terror that protect our long-term national security interests,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgraham.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/biography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">read<\/a> his website.<\/p>\n<p>He was a strong supporter of Israel and backed Trump\u2019s ongoing war on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s Defence Ministry said on Sunday morning it was saddened by the death of Graham, \u201cwho stood with Israel in its most difficult time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, he ran for the Republican nomination but dropped\u00a0out\u00a0before the primaries began, having been an outspoken critic of Trump. He later became one of his staunchest allies in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Before entering politics, Graham served for more than six years as an air force lawyer and then,\u00a0in 1995,\u00a0joined the air force reserves, where he stayed for 20 years.
