Will.i.am is a goodwill ambassador to the AI for Good Skills Coalition, a global initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency for digital technologies, to promote learning and development of AI skills across the globe, especially among schoolchildren in distressed regions. Along with ITU, the AI for Good Summit was also supported by the International Electrotechnical Commission (EIC). <\/p>\n The acronym LLM should stand for \u201clive with love mechanism,\u201d will.i.am urged in a press conference at the AI for Good event. \u201cWhich \u2018ism\u2019 does AI align with? Is AI an agent of capitalism? Communism? Racism? Socialism? Or humanism? If its humanism, we\u2019re all right. It\u2019s all about being empathetic, being mindful, having tolerance, love, patience, understanding, curiosity, urgency to solve problems. Humanism is the only ism AI should be in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Importantly, AI is prompting the growth of new industries that are only beginning to be realized, he pointed out. For instance, when it comes to AI being seen as a threat to creative talent in music and the arts, it points to a \u201cstorytelling problem,\u201d he said. \u201cThe people that are building the models are researchers who went to school, but didn\u2019t learn about the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking back over the history of technology-driven innovation, \u201cThomas Edison collaborated with not only technologists, but the arts,\u201d he pointed out. The development of vinyl records created a whole new art industry. The Grammy is a gramophone, the original hardware.”<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s AI technology is phenomenal, \u201cand in a way, the developers are too \u2013 they are artists, just as much as I am an artist. I\u2019m a musician because I sample music. Everything is a sample of a sample of a sample of a sample. So who are we to criticize the developers? They sample everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
The issue, he continued, is the lack of \u201cstorytelling around the artist, called the developers.\u201d This is a temporary problem, he added. In music, entire new genres emerged from technology developments, such as synthesizers and drum machines.
With AI, the genre is still unclear, but emerging. \u201cEvery time a new technology comes into the world, a new genre comes; a new industry comes.\u201d<\/p>\n
