Built from three everyday materials—sand, construction rubble, and discarded automobiles—the work resembles an archaeological landscape suspended somewhere between ruin, excavation, and performance.

Rather than introducing new materials into the city, Mercier assembles resources borrowed from existing industrial cycles before returning each one to its original destination after the exhibition closes, emphasizing transformation over permanence.

built from three everyday materials, the work resembles an archaeological landscape | all images by Erwan Fichou

crushed cars emerge from sculpted dunes

At the center of Fossil Opera, partially buried vehicles appear trapped beneath carefully sculpted mounds of sand. Their twisted metal bodies emerge like fossils uncovered during an excavation, while piles of demolition rubble reinforce the impression of an urban landscape caught between collapse and renewal. The installation blurs distinctions between natural geology and manufactured debris, inviting visitors to read contemporary waste as tomorrow’s archaeological record.

The work continues Mercier’s long-standing interest in objects undergoing transformation. Here, sand sourced from regional quarries is shaped by a team of specialist sand sculptors, while construction debris collected from Nantes building sites is combined with end-of-life vehicles supplied by a local scrapyard. Together, the materials create a landscape whose monumental scale contrasts with the temporary nature of its construction.

the artist assembles resources borrowed from existing industrial cycles

borrowed materials return to their original cycles

In keeping with the artist’s practice, none of the installation’s components are intended to become permanent artworks. Once Le Voyage à Nantes concludes, the sand will return to regional quarries, the rubble will re-enter construction waste streams, and the vehicles will go back to the scrapyard. Rather than producing new material, Fossil Opera exists as a temporary interruption within ongoing cycles of extraction, demolition, recycling, and reuse.

This reversible approach places process alongside spectacle. Instead of treating the installation as a fixed monument, Mercier frames it as a momentary reconfiguration of materials that already belong to the city—one that disappears almost as completely as it appeared.

Commissioned by Le Voyage à Nantes for its 2026 summer edition, Fossil Opera is accompanied by an original sound composition by Sammy Bichon, extending the installation into an immersive environmental experience while reinforcing its operatic title.

french artist théo mercier

fossil opera has crushed cars emerge from dig site French artist Théo Mercier unveils Fossil Opera, a…

[31
437,434,435,436,17859,438,146,6545,245372,85,46,991,5252
post-538601","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-car-design","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-exhibitions","tag-french-exhibition","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-materials","tag-public-art
["GET
