{"id":540475,"date":"2026-07-14T06:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T06:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/540475\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T06:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T06:14:10","slug":"spaceflight-seems-to-damage-knee-cartilage-and-scientists-may-have-found-a-way-to-protect-it-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/540475\/","title":{"rendered":"Spaceflight Seems to Damage Knee Cartilage, And Scientists May Have Found a Way to Protect It : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spaceflight is rough on the mammalian body.<\/p>\n<p>Fluids redistribute in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/here-s-the-really-gross-reason-why-you-don-t-want-to-burp-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surprising ways<\/a>, heavy-duty protective equipment can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-horrifying-thing-happens-to-your-fingernails-after-a-walk-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cause physical damage<\/a>, and, without the constant strain of fighting against gravity, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2404644121\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tissues<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/genetically-engineered-beefcake-mice-retain-their-muscle-mass-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">muscle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nasa-took-mice-into-space-and-it-did-something-scary-to-their-bones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bone<\/a> degrade relatively quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these changes gradually improve once astronauts return to Earth. But one potential consequence of spaceflight is especially concerning.<\/p>\n<p>Mice flown on the International Space Station experience <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-021-90010-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">degradation<\/a> of the cartilage that cushions the bone in load-bearing <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1667\/rr15216.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knee joints<\/a>. Joint cartilage has a limited ability to repair itself.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists now think they may have found a possible countermeasure. <\/p>\n<p>Mice treated with a plant compound called kaempferol before and during simulated spaceflight conditions experienced less severe cartilage degradation than untreated mice.<\/p>\n<p>The study also identified a key molecular pathway behind the damage, revealing that a protein called NOX4 drives mitochondrial dysfunction in cartilage cells.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery could also help scientists better understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-new-non-surgical-procedure-provides-lasting-relief-for-knee-pain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knee osteoarthritis<\/a>, a common disease in which the cartilage cushioning the joint gradually wears away over time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"388\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/experiment1.jpg\" alt=\"Scientists May Have Found a Way to Protect Knee Cartilage During Spaceflight\" class=\"wp-image-208911\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A schematic diagram of the experimental conditions with samples stained to highlight cartilage damage. Sci., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>The effects of spaceflight on human cartilage are poorly understood, and cartilage is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41526-024-00445-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not widely monitored or protected<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/biomedicines10061356\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022 review <\/a>of current research on joint cartilage and spaceflight noted, astronauts have shown elevated levels of a biomarker associated with cartilage breakdown.<\/p>\n<p>When combined with research on rodents, those findings raise concerns that long-duration spaceflight could increase the risk of knee osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh wanted to know more about how cartilage damage might affect human spaceflight, particularly in long-duration missions such as a jaunt to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mars\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73083\" data-postid=\"208905\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In this study,&#8221; they wrote in a paper published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.76477\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced Science<\/a>, &#8220;we hypothesized that exposure to spaceflight conditions induces mitochondrial dysfunction and cartilage degradation, and that preserving mitochondrial function protects against cartilage loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For ethical reasons, we can&#8217;t really put humans upside down in a box and bombard them with radiation, so the researchers opted to conduct their research on mice instead.<\/p>\n<p>The study involved several groups of mice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/experiment-2.jpg\" alt=\"Scientists May Have Found a Way to Protect Knee Cartilage During Spaceflight\" class=\"wp-image-208914\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Human cartilage grown under simulated microgravity showed healthier cartilage and lower oxidative stress after treatment with kaempferol.  (Yin et al., Adv. Sci., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>First, the researchers examined mice that had spent 60 days on the ISS and compared them with mice that had remained here on Earth in similar conditions, receiving the same care and diet but without exposure to microgravity or the space environment.<\/p>\n<p>They also kept mice in a ground-based simulation of spaceflight \u2013 enclosures in which the hind legs of the mice were elevated to mimic microgravity, while they were exposed to a laboratory-generated radiation mix designed to simulate galactic cosmic rays.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the control mice, both the mice on the ISS and the mice in the simulated conditions showed signs of cartilage damage.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to identify why the damage was occurring.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers cultivated human cartilage from  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73034\" data-postid=\"208905\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">stem cells<\/a> (isolated from femoral heads) and placed it in a rotating bioreactor to mimic microgravity, but without radiation.<\/p>\n<p>The results of this test showed that microgravity puts the cartilage under stress. It produced higher levels of inflammatory markers and damaging reactive oxygen molecules, showed signs of cellular aging, and lost mitochondrial energy, along with several other characteristics of healthy cartilage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/cristoforetti-exercise.jpg\" alt=\"Spaceflight Seems to Damage Knee Cartilage, And Scientists May Have Found a Way to Protect It\" class=\"wp-image-208917\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti exercising on the International Space Station. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/station\/iss-research\/astronaut-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(ESA\/NASA)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers traced these changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/nox4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NOX4<\/a>, a protein that promotes oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.<\/p>\n<p>The final step was to introduce a compound called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaempferol\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kaempferol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a natural flavonol found in many plants that we eat, such as dark leafy greens, tea, beans, berries, and other fruits and vegetables. It can <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/09603271231154227\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bind to NOX4<\/a> and reduce its activity.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research has shown that kaempferol reduces <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fphar.2021.624402\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oxidative stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/foods12203836\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mitochondrial damage<\/a>. Crucially, research in rats has shown that it can also <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.biopha.2024.116717\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slow the progression of knee osteoarthritis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/experiment3.jpg\" alt=\"Scientists May Have Found a Way to Protect Knee Cartilage During Spaceflight\" class=\"wp-image-208912\"  \/>A paper figure showing the degree to which cartilage damage was mitigated with kaempferol. Sci., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>When mice in simulated spaceflight conditions were treated with oral kaempferol, the difference was notable.<\/p>\n<p>They had less cartilage loss, healthier mitochondria, less inflammation, and lower levels of harmful reactive oxygen molecules.<\/p>\n<p>The damage wasn&#8217;t completely prevented, but it was significantly less severe than the damage experienced by untreated mice.<\/p>\n<p>This is still a very early-stage study with some significant limitations. <\/p>\n<p>It was conducted on mice, not humans, and although the researchers examined mice that had spent time aboard the ISS, the protective effects of kaempferol were tested only in ground-based simulations of spaceflight, not during an actual mission.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also tested a purified kaempferol preparation at a carefully controlled dose, so the findings cannot be taken to mean kaempferol-rich food would prevent knee problems.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/genetically-engineered-beefcake-mice-retain-their-muscle-mass-in-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Genetically Engineered Beefcake Mice Retain Their Muscle Mass in Space<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, it does offer some really promising avenues for further research.<\/p>\n<p>The team identified a mitochondrial mechanism behind the degradation of knee cartilage during spaceflight, and they found a promising way to slow that process.<\/p>\n<p>And, because the same mechanism is involved in knee osteoarthritis, the finding may also help scientists working to improve the lives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S2665-9913(23)00163-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of millions of people<\/a> around the world affected by the degenerative condition.<\/p>\n<p>And if you want to eat more spinach anyway\u2026 well, there&#8217;s plenty of other evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-key-food-nutrients-linked-to-slower-brain-aging\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it certainly couldn&#8217;t hurt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research has been published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.76477\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-sciencealert-light-gray-background-color has-background\">This article was fact-checked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/carly-cassella\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carly Cassella<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rebecca-dyer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Dyer<\/a>.
