Image: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI; Image Processing: Alyssa Pagan (STScI), Joseph DePasquale (STScI), Macarena Garcia Marin (ESA Office at STScI)<br \/>\nWe can see the surroundings of the supermassive black hole<\/p>\n<p>At the core of Centaurus A sits a supermassive black hole feeding on surrounding material.<\/p>\n<p>As it feeds, it launches powerful jets and releases enormous amounts of energy.<\/p>\n<p>Webb is enabling astronomers to see exactly how this cosmic behemoth shapes the region around it.<\/p>\n<p>It tracks the complex, invisible motion of galactic gas<\/p>\n<p>By analysing light using a technique called spectroscopy, astronomers can measure how gas is moving about within Centaurus A.<\/p>\n<p>Early findings show fast-moving ionised gas flowing outward, probably driven by the galaxy&#8217;s central supermassive black hole, alongside warmer molecular hydrogen moving in a warped rotating disk near the centre.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an example of how Webb is pushing the boundaries<\/p>\n<p>As Shawn Domagal-Goldman, division director, astrophysics at NASA Headquarters explains:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No single telescope tells the whole story.
