{"id":541544,"date":"2026-07-14T20:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/541544\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T20:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:18:09","slug":"hundreds-of-economists-say-we-must-act-now-on-ais-economic-impact-and-job-displacement-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/541544\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of economists say &#8216;we must act now&#8217; on AI\u2019s economic impact and job displacement risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO (AP) \u2014 Hundreds of economists say in an open letter that institutions \u201cmust act now\u201d to address how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0could transform the economy and could put many people out of work.<\/p>\n<p>The statement released Monday was signed by top economists, along with computer scientists and some executives at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ai-inflation-federal-reserve-434f02e62a02f9b92e57995d9375df57\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tech companies<\/a>\u00a0including Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years,\u201d says the letter organized by Stanford University&#8217;s digital economy lab. \u201cThis could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame. It could bring risks, including large-scale job displacement, as well as opportunities such as major gains in living standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter, which has only four sentences, says leaders must \u201cbuild the incentives, guardrails, and institutions needed to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Stanford lab says the letter has so far been signed by more than 200 economists and AI researchers, including 16 winners of a Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Computer scientist and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio was among the signatories and said in a separate statement that based on the trajectory of AI development, \u201cit is highly plausible that AI will drastically transform our economies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must be intentional and make collective, democratic choices, rather than letting market forces play out and risking leaving most citizens behind,\u201d wrote Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>        &#13;<br \/>\n            &#13;<\/p>\n<p>                Follow us for more stories like this<\/p>\n<p>            &#13;<\/p>\n<p>        &#13;<br \/>\n            &#13;<\/p>\n<p>CapRadio provides a trusted source of news because of you. \u00a0As a nonprofit organization, donations from people like you sustain the journalism that allows us to discover stories that are important to our audience.
