BBC’s new director general has offered an update on the future of Doctor Who a month after it was announced that the network’s sci-fi staple would be put out to competitive tender. Last month, the BBC shared the decision to not go ahead with the planned 2026 Christmas special as the show undergoes a creative overhaul that saw returning showrunner Russell T Davies exiting the Whoniverse.

Now, BBC’s newly appointed director general Matt Brittin, who’s a fan of the iconic series, has reassured fans that Doctor Who will regenerate once more.

Speaking as the BBC published its annual report, Brittin said of Doctor Who (via Radio Times): “That’s a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and we’ll do so again.”

“I think that’s one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC,” Brittin added.

“We can do that, and we can creatively renew shows that people love, and we’ll be working hard on that right now.”

While Doctor Who is guaranteed to return to our screens, there is no exact indication as to when that might happen. First predictions seem to confirm it might take years before the Tardis lands once again, as an unofficial 2028 return date has been thrown around.

In June, the BBC shared a statement on the future of Doctor Who, confirming the festive special wouldn’t make the air after initial speculation of a delay.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory,” the statement read.

Davies also shared he and production company Bad Wolf would not be returning to the show, while telling fans the longer wait for more Doctor Who would be “worth it”.

“You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!”

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK, with classic episodes available via BBC iPlayer.
