New Study Challenges Popular Theory : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/keto-diet-may-have-a-surprising-bonus-benefit-mouse-study-suggests?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ketogenic diet<\/a> has become one of the world&#8217;s most popular eating plans. <\/p>\n<p>Originally developed to help control epilepsy, the high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet has since been investigated for everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mouse-study-flags-a-serious-downside-to-popular-weight-loss-diet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weight loss<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/keto-diet-may-help-protect-against-multiple-brain-diseases-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a> \u2013 and even as a potential way to influence  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cancer\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73077\" data-postid=\"209119\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But despite years of research, scientists still don&#8217;t fully understand how the diet affects different organs, let alone different parts of the digestive tract.<\/p>\n<p>While some studies have suggested ketogenic diets may help suppress certain tumors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mouse-study-flags-a-serious-downside-to-popular-weight-loss-diet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">others have hinted<\/a> that the picture is far more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Now, researchers have uncovered another piece of that puzzle, publishing their findings in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10779-y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In experiments involving mice genetically predisposed to intestinal cancer, the same ketogenic diet appeared to produce completely opposite effects depending on where in the gut it was acting: It accelerated tumor growth in the small intestine while suppressing tumors in the colon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/1784133872_146_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say the biggest surprise wasn&#8217;t simply that the diet produced opposite outcomes, but why. <\/p>\n<p>Rather than being driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ketone_bodies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ketone bodies<\/a> \u2013 the molecules that have become almost synonymous with ketogenic diets \u2013 the effects were linked to how intestinal cells metabolize dietary fat.<\/p>\n<p>The findings challenge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-04649-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the leading theories<\/a> about how ketogenic diets influence cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The team, led by MIT biologist and pathologist Omer Yilmaz, wanted to understand whether the ketogenic diet&#8217;s reported benefits against colorectal cancer might extend to other parts of the intestine.<\/p>\n<p>To find out, the researchers fed mice genetically predisposed to developing intestinal tumors one of three diets: a ketogenic diet, a standard control diet, or a high-fat, high-calorie diet commonly used to induce obesity.<\/p>\n<p>The results were unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Surprisingly, neither increasing nor eliminating ketone production altered intestinal tumor growth,&#8221; co-first author and MIT molecular biologist Fangtao Chi told ScienceAlert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead, we found that its tumor-promoting effects in the small intestine were driven by the metabolism of dietary fat rather than by ketone bodies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1065\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/KetoDietAcceleratesIntestinalTumourGrowth-1065x675.png\" alt=\"Could The Keto Diet Be Fueling Cancer? (Shay et al., Nature, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>Mice on the ketogenic diet developed small intestinal tumors at rates comparable to \u2013 or even higher than \u2013 those fed the obesity-inducing diet, despite remaining lean themselves. <\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the ketogenic diet continued to suppress tumor development in the colon, echoing findings from earlier research.<\/p>\n<p>That raised an obvious question: if ketone bodies weren&#8217;t responsible, what was?<\/p>\n<p>For years, ketones \u2013 particularly beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) \u2013 have been considered one of the defining features of the ketogenic diet, and previous studies had suggested they might help explain its protective effects against colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the MIT team found that the real driver was something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p>As intestinal cells broke down dietary fat for energy \u2013 a process known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41392-021-00831-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatty acid oxidation<\/a> \u2013 they activated proteins called PPARs. Those proteins, in turn, encouraged intestinal  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73034\" data-postid=\"209119\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">stem cells<\/a> to divide more rapidly. <\/p>\n<p>While that extra  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73034\" data-postid=\"209119\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">stem cell<\/a> activity can help repair damaged tissue, it also increases the chances that some of those cells will become cancerous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having more stem cells means that when you injure the small intestine, it can repair itself better,&#8221; Yilmaz told ScienceAlert. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the downside is that having more active stem cells can lead to tumor formation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new findings also challenge one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/is-keto-worth-the-risk-a-new-study-casts-doubt-on-its-safety?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the biggest ideas in keto research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-022-04649-6?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022 Nature study<\/a> suggested that ketogenic diets help protect against colon cancer because of ketone bodies such as BHB. The new study reached a different conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Diet and metabolism are often discussed together, but they&#8217;re not always the same thing,&#8221; MIT hepatologist Jessica Shay, co-first author of the study, told ScienceAlert. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings show that in this model, it&#8217;s the high dietary fat content, not the ketone bodies produced during ketosis, that drives these effects on intestinal cancer, highlighting the importance of distinguishing ketogenic diets from ketone supplements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that ketones weren&#8217;t driving either effect. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, both the protection seen in the colon and the increased tumor growth in the small intestine appeared to be linked to how cells burn dietary fat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expected ketone bodies like BHB to be the direct drivers,&#8221; said Yilmaz. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead, we found they were essentially metabolic bystanders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like all preclinical studies, these findings come with important caveats.<\/p>\n<p>The experiments were conducted in a mouse model genetically predisposed to developing intestinal tumors. The closest human equivalent is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/familial-adenomatous-polyposis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20372443\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">familial adenomatous polyposis<\/a>, a rare inherited condition that greatly increases the risk of developing intestinal tumors.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chronic-constipation-may-be-linked-to-your-guts-second-brain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Constipation May Be More Than a Simple Digestion Problem, Scientists Say<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers say more work is needed to determine whether the same mechanisms operate in people.<\/p>\n<p>The study also suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/keto-diet-cancer-researcher-harvard-cardiologist-high-fat-plan?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commercially available ketone supplements<\/a> are unlikely to reproduce either the risks or the benefits seen in the experiments. <\/p>\n<p>Because the effects were linked to fat metabolism rather than ketone bodies themselves, simply increasing ketone levels may not have the same biological impact.<\/p>\n<p>The team is now trying to understand why the same diet has such different effects in two neighboring parts of the intestine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t know why they&#8217;re responding differently,&#8221; said Yilmaz. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the question we&#8217;re working on next.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The findings are reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10779-y\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-sciencealert-light-gray-background-color has-background\">This article was fact-checked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clare-watson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clare Watson<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rebecca-dyer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Dyer<\/a>.
