Hor\u00e1lek)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-0c9798aa-8087-11f1-bf72-bd16df41a934\">A laser star guide beams up from the Gemini South Observatory and into the Milky Way on Cerro Pach\u00f3n, a mountain in central Chile.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-778cd3f4-8088-11f1-8939-c794daf269e9\"\/>What is it? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7a3a209c-8089-11f1-87bf-c39f8018585d\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/milky-way-shines-over-gemini-south-observatory-space-photo-of-the-day-for-jan-26-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/milky-way-shines-over-gemini-south-observatory-space-photo-of-the-day-for-jan-26-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/milky-way-shines-over-gemini-south-observatory-space-photo-of-the-day-for-jan-26-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gemini South Observatory<\/a>, located in Chile, is one of two Gemini Observatories with the other located in Hawaii (named Gemini North, or &#8216;Alopeke) on the volcano Mauna Kea.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7a3a209c-8089-11f1-87bf-c39f8018585d-1\">Each Gemini Observatory has a 26.6-foot (8.1-meter) telescope. On the same mountain in Chile sits the 13.4-foot (4.1-meter) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/snow-covers-the-soar-telescope-in-chile-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-14-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/snow-covers-the-soar-telescope-in-chile-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-14-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/snow-covers-the-soar-telescope-in-chile-space-photo-of-the-day-for-july-14-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SOAR telescope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/20220407_Pachon_P35mm_SOARG_L_Fulld1-CC-c5\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/images\/20220407_Pachon_P35mm_SOARG_L_Fulld1-CC-c5\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">this photograph<\/a> captured by Petr Hor\u00e1lek, an audiovisual ambassador for the U.S. national center for ground-based, nighttime optical astronomy at NOIRLab (the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory), it looks like Gemini South is about to be beamed up into the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>However, there isn&#8217;t some alien ship behind that laser beam. Instead, Gemini South is beaming up a laser guide star, or a powerful laser that creates the appearance of a fake star in the night sky. This fake star acts as a reference point, helping the telescope to calibrate and correct any light distortions.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-778cd46c-8088-11f1-9bae-e387c640c9f1\"\/>Why is it incredible? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7a3a2114-8089-11f1-9ff0-e7e5c1f3fde6\">Even from just this photograph, which shows an observatory in action, it&#8217;s clear why this mountain is a hotspot for astronomical observing.<\/p>\n<p>These peaks are chosen for many reasons, including their altitude and how far they are from bright lights that could affect observations. But even in a regular photograph, Hor\u00e1lek was able to show the incredible beauty of the glow of the Milky Way&#8217;s heart above the mountain range, with every color in the rainbow popping up in the gas and dust across our galaxy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Even the framing of the shot draws you in, as the viewer feels almost pulled down the road toward the observatory and right up into the Milky Way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Gemini South Observatory shoots out a beam of light.
