Two months after Instructure made a deal with hackers to salvage troves of stolen user data, the company\u2014which owns the popular learning management system Canvas\u2014has paused the delivery of data related to the breach because of a potential security threat with a third-party delivery platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In May, a criminal extortion group known as ShinyHunters twice hacked Canvas<\/a> and claimed that it gained access to the personal identifying information of 275 million people across 9,000 institutions. At the time, the company said the leaked information included names, email addresses, student ID numbers and user messages, but it \u201cfound no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were involved.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n In the aftermath, Instructure CEO Steve Daly vowed<\/a> to be \u201ctransparent about what happened\u201d and provide K\u201312 schools and higher education institutions \u201cwith information as quickly as we responsibly could.\u201d Over the past two months, Instructure has worked \u201cto conduct a detailed forensic review of the data involved in this incident,\u201d Daly said in a memo last week. <\/p>\n On Tuesday, the company was set to deliver to institutions the first wave of data related to the breach.<\/p>\n Instead, Daly said Tuesday<\/a> that the company is \u201cpausing data delivery out of an abundance of caution\u201d after learning that \u201cthe third-party platform we\u2019ve selected to deliver your data may have been subject to a security threat.\u201d (In a previous memo<\/a>, Instructure said institutions would receive the data \u201cthrough a secure, permissioned ShareFile link sent directly from Sharefile only to the security contact(s) your institution has designated.\u201d)<\/p>\n Daly assured customers\u2014which includes the 41\u00a0percent of higher education institutions in North America that use Canvas for course delivery\u2014that though their \u201cdata remains secure,\u201d the company \u201cwill proceed only when we are confident the third-party platform is safe\u00a0\u2026 Security is paramount, and before we upload your data, we want to take the time to assess the platform\u2019s safety or find an alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n This article was updated to clarify that the potential security threat was with a third-party provider.
