\n\tAs Brazil\u2019s explosion on the Oscar and A-Fest scene turns its top actors into international stars, two of its biggest breakouts, \u201cI\u2019m Not Here\u201d co-lead Selton Mello<\/a> and \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d star Mar\u00eda Fernanda C\u00e2ndido, will be honored at Brazil\u2019s Gramado Film Festival<\/a>, bringing the aura of burgeoning international renown <\/a>to one of the country\u2019s oldest and biggest film events.<\/p>\n

\n\tTaking place in a mountain resort famed for its Alpine-style architecture, snow, chocolate shops and fondue restaurants, the 54th edition of Brazil\u2019s Gramado Film Festival will fittingly open with a world premiere that again contrasts with the country\u2019s tropical image: \u201cAnt\u00e1rtida\u201d (\u201cAntarctic\u201d), set at a South Pole base. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tProduced by Brazilian media giant Globo<\/a>, \u201cAnt\u00e1rtida\u201d is helmed by Bruno Safadi, a director on breakout TV series \u201cAruanas.\u201d<\/a> It is penned by Claudia Jovin, one of Brazil\u2019s hottest up-and-coming scribes after lead writing Globoplay 2025 smash hit \u201cPerfect Days.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tSix Brazilian features will compete in Gramado for the main Kikito prize, five of them world premieres, also taking in \u201cChor\u00e3o: S\u00f3 os Loucos Sabem,\u201d \u201cJustino \u2013 Nos Bastidores do Reino,\u201d \u201cLeite em P\u00f3,\u201d \u201cNosso Segredo\u201d and \u201cPele de Rinoceronte.\u201d The sixth, \u201cGugu\u2019s World\u201d (\u201cFeito Pipa\u201d), won best film at Berlin\u2019s Generation KPlus this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tRunning Aug. 12-22, Gramado will close with Chilean Dominga Sotomayor<\/a>\u2019s \u201cLa Perra,\u201d well received <\/a>at Cannes\u2019 Directors\u2019 Fortnight and co-produced by top Brazilian company RT Features<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFour features vie for Gramado\u2019s documentary Kikito: \u201cAfrontosa,\u201d by Coraci Ruiz and Julio Matos; \u201cEmpeleitada,\u201d from Micaele Xukuru, Chico Ludermir and Sergio Borges; \u201cGonzaguinha, da Maior Liberdade,\u201d directed by Susanna Lira; and \u201cO Projeto,\u201d helmed by Sabrina Fidalgo and Yvan Rodic.<\/p>\n

\n\tGramado will also stage the awaited Brazilian premiere \u201cEmerg\u00eancia 53\u201d Episode 1, a Conspira\u00e7\u00e3o production for Globoplay from two driving forces of Globo\u2019s small hit \u201cUnder Pressure.\u201c Andrucha Waddington and Cl\u00e1udio Torres. At a time of gathering TV artistic caution stood out at this year\u2019s Berlinale Series Market for its boldness, the mobile emergency medical unit procedural winning the event\u2019s first Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award<\/a> for outstanding creative projects that combine artistic ambition with international potential.<\/p>\n

\n\tActresses Ana Flavia Cavalcanti and Camila Morgado and film critic Marcos Santuario served as curators of this year\u2019s fest\u2019s selection.<\/p>\n

\n\tA Globo telenovela child star who went on to headline multiple Brazilian movies, Mello played the role of father Rubens Paiva in \u201cI\u2019m Still Here,\u201d the first Portuguese-language Brazilian feature to win an Academy Award, in addition to to making a splash on Brazil\u2019s arthouse scene directing \u201cThe Clown\u201d and \u201cThe Movie of My Life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tC\u00e2ndido is known internationally for her roles in Marco Bellocchio\u2019s \u201cThe Traitor\u201d \u201cFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore\u201d and \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d which scored four Oscar-nominations, an all-time record for Brazil.<\/p>\n

\n\tPresident of the Brazilian Film Academy, producer Renata Almeida Magalh\u00e3es (\u201cFavela Gay\u201d) will receive the Eduardo Abelin Trophy. Andrea Beltr\u00e3o, nominated for an Intl. Emmy Award for her performance in \u201cHebe,\u201d will take home the Oscarito Trophy. Actor, screenwriter and director Marcos Caruso (\u201cBrazil Avenue\u201d) will be honored with the City of Gramado Trophy.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Gramado Film Festival is organized by Gramadotur, the tourism and culture authority of Gramado Town Hall. The 40,000-inhabitant mountain resort town liesin Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil\u2019s southernmost state. It has a distinctly Bavarian feel, reflecting the influx of German settlers in the 19th century.<\/p>\n

\n\tRosa Helena Volk, president of Gramadotur, stressed the fact that all feature films in the competitive sections this year will offer audio description and Brazilian Sign Language interpretation and subtitles.<\/p>\n

\n\tA closer look at some of the festival\u2019s major films:<\/p>\n

\n\tOpening Film<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnt\u00e1rtida\u201d stars Andrea Beltr\u00e3o, Marina Ruy Barbosa, Leandra Leal, Antonio Calloni, L\u00e1zaro Ramos and Jo\u00e3o Vitor Silva. The pic was lensed in Globo\u2019s modern studios in Rio, with technology that simulated sequences in Antarctica. It turns on In\u00eas, who is assaultedat a Brazilian South Pole base with scientists and military personnel, turning all the men into suspects. Deputy commander Elisabeth leads an investigation to find the perpetrator. Paris Filmes will release \u201cAnt\u00e1rtida\u201d in local theaters on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI come from auteur cinema, but I had the opportunity to make a major production with all the resources and time we needed,\u201d Safadi said in the ceremony for the fest\u2019s lineup announcement.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt took me nine years to see this project come to life. What was missing was the technology. I can\u2019t wait to feel the warmth of the audience,\u201d said Jouvin.<\/p>\n

\n\tMain Competition Films:<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cChor\u00e3o: S\u00f3 os Loucos Sabem\u201d (Hugo Prata and Felipe Novaes) depicts the life of Chor\u00e3o, the frontman of local pop group Charlie Brown Jr. Jos\u00e9 Loreto and Nanda Marques star in the pic that is produced by Bravura Cinematogr\u00e1fica in co-production with Globo Filmes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cJustino \u2013 Nos Bastidores do Reino\u201d\u00a0(Jos\u00e9 Eduardo Belmonte). Set in 1980s Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s and produced by Mercado Filmes. Vet Belmonte helms the film that stars Christian Malheiros, Antonio Pitanga and Caio Blat. In the story, the protagonist finds in a powerful neo-Pentecostal church an opportunity to escape poverty.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLeite em P\u00f3\u201d (Carlos Segundo). Produced by O Sopro do Tempo, Vitrine Filmes and Les Valseurs, the story of a rock-obsessed musician whose life falls apart after family loss. The cast includes Vinicius de Oliveira, Antonio Pitanga, Zezita Matos and Rejane Faria.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNosso Segredo\u201d (Grace Pass\u00f4). Produced by Entre Filmes, co-production by Globo Filmes, the story of a family\u2019s attempt to rebuild its routine following a recent loss. The movie stars Robert Frank, Efraim Santos, J\u00e9ssica Gaspar, Flip and Ju Colombo.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPele de Rinoceronte\u201d (Marcello Ludwig Maia). 1970s-set and starring D\u00e9bora Falabella as a reporter for a popular newspaper whose life changes following a murder that shocked Brazil. The drama also features Naruna Costa and Irandhir Santos. Rep\u00fablica Pureza produced the pic, in co-production with Canal Brasil and Telecine. \u201c\u2018Pele de Rinoceronte\u2019 is a deeply personal story that addresses what I see as a major issue in Brazil: violence against women,\u201d Maia said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGugu\u2019s World\u201d (\u201cFeito Pipa,\u201dAllan Deberton) centers one a boy who dreams of becoming a great soccer player. Raised by his grandmother, he fears having to move back in with his father. Starring L\u00e1zaro Ramos, Yuri Gomes and Teca Pereira and produced by Deberton Filmes and Bi\u00f4nica Filmes (\u201cCharcoal,\u201d \u201cToll\u201d).<\/p>\n
