Several former and current employees of Israel’s Tax Authority<\/a> were arrested on Monday on suspicion of accepting bribes, Israel Police announced.<\/p>\n

Investigating Lahav 433<\/a> forces carried out four arrests at the suspects’ homes and offices.<\/p>\n

According to the police, the arrested suspects were thought to have granted around NIS 80 million in illegal tax returns in exchange for the bribes.<\/p>\n

Three of the suspects were former employees, while one had still been serving as an assessement team coordinator in Petah Tikva at the time of their arrest.<\/p>\n

Last week, Shas MK Haim Biton<\/a> was questioned by Lahav 433 as part of supplementary investigative proceedings into his alleged misconduct and use of public funds to finance a haredi (ultra-Orthodox) newspaper.<\/p>\n

He is suspected of using funds from the Ma’ayan HaChinuch HaTorani education network to finance a private Shas-affiliated newspaper while serving as the network\u2019s director general about seven years ago.<\/p>\n

The case has been handled by Lahav 443<\/a> over the past year and is expected to be transferred soon to the state attorney and attorney general for a decision on whether to file an indictment in the affair.<\/p>\n
