Notably, today marks 72 years since the great Elvis Presley released his debut single, “That’s All Right.” And as longtime fans of Deep Purple know, it’s unfortunately the 50th anniversary of the iconic band announcing its split.

It is also 51 years since Paul McCartney and Wings celebrated another special milestone.

On July 19, 1975, “Listen to What the Man Said” by Wings replaced Captain & Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together” (four consecutive weeks at the top) as the No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. This was the band’s third No. 1 hit in the United States, following “My Love” (1973) and “Band on the Run” (1974).

Most of “Listen to What the Man Said” was recorded at Sea-Saint Studios in New Orleans, Louisiana. The last overdubs for the song were subsequently recorded at Wally Heider Studios in Los Angeles, California.

Paul McCartney and Wings Had Six No. 1 Hits in the United States

Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney during a 1975 performance with the Wings at Hammersmith Odeon, London.(Photo by Wood/Evening Standard/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

“Listen to What the Man Said” marked the third straight year of a No. 1 hit for Wings in the United States.
