He is the first person appointed to the position since Yahya Sinwar was killed in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas\u2019s exiled Gaza chief and top negotiator has become an increasingly central figure in its leadership since the deaths of Sinwar in Gaza and Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/iran-news\/article-903063\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iran<\/a> in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Hayya has become increasingly influential as other senior Hamas officials have been killed in Israeli strikes. He left Gaza several years ago and was based in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-903002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Qatar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Hayya served as a Hamas point person for ties with Arab and Islamic states. He accompanied Haniyeh on his visit to Tehran in July 2024, during which the latter was assassinated.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/health-and-wellness\/mind-and-spirit\/article-902787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">October 7<\/a> massacre was supposed to be a limited operation by Hamas to capture \u201ca number of soldiers\u201d and swap them for jailed Palestinians, Hayya reportedly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cBut the Zionist army unit completely collapsed,\u201d the Hamas-linked Palestinian Information Center quoted him as saying, referring to the IDF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The terrorist attack had succeeded in bringing the Palestinian issue back into international focus, Hayya said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Hayya served as chief negotiator for the terrorist organization during the Israel-Hamas War.
