Electric Ireland has said it is seeking to \u201creview\u201d a case where it was accused of \u201cthreatening\u201d a pensioner over around \u20ac16 in arrears, after the matter was raised by a TD.<\/p>\n
Independent TD for Tipperary Mattie McGrath raised the case of a recently-widowed \u201celderly pensioner in his 80s\u201d.<\/p>\n
McGrath said the man is also in poor health and had received \u201can aggressive and intimidating arrears letter warning of possible cancellation of his payment plan and implied disconnection\u201d despite owing around \u20ac16.<\/p>\n
The TD said the the amount \u201chas since been fully cleared\u201d.<\/p>\n
McGrath said his constituent had come under pressure due to funeral costs and additional cost-of-living expenses.<\/p>\n
He said he had been put under a \u20ac75 per week payment plan to clear around 800 euro in arrears, but had been actually paying \u20ac80 per week.<\/p>\n
McGrath said a letter telling the man he had not kept up with the payment plan and owed \u20ac16.41 caused him \u201csignificant fear and upset\u201d as he believed he was at risk of losing his gas supply.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy office is seeing cases like this on a far too frequent basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not how we treat vulnerable pensioners, or anyone else for that matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
McGrath said ESB, which operates Electric Ireland, reported \u20ac636 million in pre\u2011tax profits and a record \u20ac2.7 billion in capital investment last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt a time when ESB is reporting enormous profits, their retail arm is issuing fear\u2011inducing letters to elderly widowers over a paltry 16 euro.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is beyond comprehension.\u201d<\/p>\n
