Doctor Who and Sherlock star Mark Gatiss has another hit on his hands with Bookish, the drama about an eccentric bookshop owner who helps the police solve crimes during a time when he himself would be seen a criminal simply for being gay.<\/p>\n

It’s that element which will be explored further in the upcoming second season<\/a> of the period detective drama, as the show’s actor, writer and creator teased in the latest issue of Radio Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been very chuffed with the response to the lavender marriage, and the whole set-up of the show,” he said. “[Gabriel and Trottie’s] arrangement suits them both, but it’s not without its dangers. We’ll see a bit of that, and a bit more of it fraying at the edges.”<\/p>\n

He also teased that the second batch of episodes would have “a slightly broader canvas”, with the fifth and sixth instalments seeing the action head to Germany.<\/p>\n

“I also think it’s more intriguing emotionally. Some of the secrets are unlocked and some questions are answered,” teased Gatiss.<\/p>\n

While cosy crime dramas are ten-a-penny these days, with Ludwig, The Hairdresser Mysteries, Professor T and Benidorm is Murder all releasing episodes across July and August, Gatiss thinks Bookish sets itself apart.<\/p>\n

“A murder mystery is a puzzle, and we have for a long time liked a puzzle with a dead body,” he said. “The key, though, is that it’s not just that. You can explore all kinds of things, as the show does.”<\/p>\n

The second season will see<\/a> W1A’s Jason Watkins, Blackadder’s Miranda Richardson, The Fall of the House of Usher’s Ruth Codd, Sherlock’s Rupert Graves, Outnumbered’s Claire Skinner and The Thursday Murder Club’s Ingrid Oliver, among others, appear in guest roles.<\/p>\n

Bookish season 2 is set to premiere in August on U&Alibi. Season 1 can be streamed via Sky\/NOW.<\/p>\n
