{"id":554040,"date":"2026-07-22T12:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T12:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/554040\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T12:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T12:54:11","slug":"the-rapture-star-jack-farthing-talks-popularity-of-apocalyptic-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/554040\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rapture star Jack Farthing talks popularity of apocalyptic TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Farthing was drawn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/the-rapture-bbc-release-date\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rapture<\/a> and his character, engineer Frasier Melville, for the same reason that he\u2019s drawn to all the characters he\u2019s played, from Poldark\u2019s George Warleggan to Selby in Rain Dogs. \u201cI love learning about different lives and I love the psychology of trying to work out how different people tick,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been part of stories that I really believe in and believe can change people\u2019s minds and open their eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farthing, 40, also understands the allure of dark, apocalyptic drama. \u201cWe are all catastrophists, aren\u2019t we?\u201d he says. \u201cOur brains are wired to imagine the worst so we can prepare for it. And these days it\u2019s very easy to go down a wormhole of worst-case scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You could argue that our fascination with end-of-the-world scenarios, as demonstrated by the popularity of movies and TV shows, books and games dedicated to the subject, from War of the Worlds to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/the-walking-dead-spin-offs-in-order\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Walking Dead<\/a> and from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/pluribus-season-2-release-date\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pluribus<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/the-rapture-ruth-madeley-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rapture<\/a>, is a cultural articulation of what Freud called \u201cthe death drive\u201d, the unconscious urge towards self-destruction and oblivion. Put interesting, witty, intelligent, wounded characters into extreme circumstances and you\u2019re on your way to compelling drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plus, he says, \u201cWe\u2019re all interested in the answer to the question: how would you behave in such a situation?
