Growing up in her father\u2019s vitamin store, Roza-Slocum was immersed in the business from an early age. Looking back on her career, she said she had \u201cwon the dad lottery,\u201d crediting her father, Jim, with instilling the values of passion, integrity and hard work that continue to shape her professional life.<\/p>\n
Drawing on experience in quality assurance, manufacturing, ingredient sourcing, regulatory affairs and business development, Roza-Slocum reflected on how the industry has evolved from its entrepreneurial beginnings into a far more sophisticated, science-driven sector. She noted that today\u2019s nutraceutical companies are now adopting pharmaceutical-style quality standards, placing greater emphasis on safety, reliability and clinical validation.<\/p>\n
While innovation continues to accelerate, Roza-Slocum noted the importance of evaluating scientific evidence before embracing new ingredients. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s true that the industry is becoming more science-driven, but what is the quality of the science being delivered?\u201d she asked. \u201cSome of the factors to consider when evaluating science are the study design, methodology, sample size, representation bias and co-founding factors. Was it peer-reviewed and published? Were the results of statistical significance? What are those results? Bottom line, before jumping on the bandwagon and saying, \u2018oh, this is great, this is the next big thing\u2019, you\u2019ve got to evaluate the quality and the quantity of the science before just being swept away into it.\u201d <\/p>\n
Roza-Slocum also discussed the progress women have made within the nutraceutical industry, noting that more women are reaching executive leadership positions and launching their own companies. However, she believes additional mentorship, networking and professional development opportunities are still needed to increase female representation in leadership. She highlighted the role of Women in Nutraceuticals (WIN) and recognized industry leaders who have helped advance opportunities for women.<\/p>\n
For young women entering the industry, Roza-Slocum offered some advice shared with her: \u201cNo matter what the subject matter is, marketing, sales, or research to the ninth degree, you\u2019ve got to just stay committed to your goal, even though the pace can be slow.
