\n\tBuzzy new projects from top international directors, including Martin McDonagh, Florian Zeller, Danny Boyle, Werner Herzog, Lance Oppenheim, Nanni Moretti and Hirokazu Kore-eda, are set to bow at the Venice Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tVenice artistic director Alberto Barbera has unveiled his lineup for the upcoming 83rd edition that, somewhat similarly to Cannes earlier this year, is dominated by works from indie filmmakers peppered with plenty of A-list stars despite a dearth of Hollywood studio or streamer-backed fare.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhich is not to say that the Lido selection lacks luster or awards consecration potential. It\u2019s a bit more subdued than recent editions, with less Hollywood glitz. But there\u2019s still enough star-wattage and mouth-watering movies to keep film buffs\u2019 pulses racing. Plus, this yearw\u2019s fest will have a dose of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll with the world premiere of Oasis reunion doc \u201cDon\u2019t Look Back in Anger,\u201d with British brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher expected to attend.<\/p>\n

\n\tMcDonagh \u2014 whose last two features \u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing,\u00a0Missouri\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cThe Banshees of Inisherin\u201d\u00a0both premiered in Venice \u2014 will be vying for the Golden Lion again with \u201cWild Horse Nine,\u201d a dark comedy about CIA agents who are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup. It stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and Parker Posey, with Searchlight Pictures distributing.<\/p>\n

\n\tZeller will be back on the Lido with \u201cBunker,\u201d his hotly anticipated follow up to \u201cThe Son.\u201d It\u2019s an elevated psychological thriller\u00a0starring Javier Bardem and Pen\u00e9lope Cruz as a real-life couple as a mysterious construction project \u2014 a bunker, commissioned by a powerful tech mogul \u2014 begins to infiltrate their lives. Paul Dano, Stephen Graham and Patrick Schwarzenegger also star. Sony Pictures Classics has North American and Southeast Asian rights.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe previously announced in-competition opener is Boyle\u2019s \u201cInk\u201d starring Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and Jack O\u2019Connell as Larry Lamb, editor of Murdoch-owned British tabloid\u00a0\u201cThe Sun.\u201d Set in 1969, the film charts how Murdoch and Lamb launched what became Britain\u2019s bestselling tabloid. Claire Foy plays Lamb\u2019s fictional wife, Jules Davies, who also serves as deputy editor of the controversial newspaper. \u201cInk\u201d will mark Boyle\u2019s first time on the Lido. Netflix recently\u00a0acquired the U.S. and Latin American rights to the film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHerzog is in competition with \u201cBucking Fastard,\u201d starring sisters Rooney and Kate Mara as twins who \u201cin search of an imaginary land where true love is possible, start digging a tunnel through a mountain range,\u201d according to an official plot description. It marks the first time the Rooney sisters have appeared on screen together. Orlando Bloom\u00a0and\u00a0Domhnall Gleeson also star. Herzog\u2019s latest was invited to Cannes earlier this year, but he declined<\/a> after it wasn\u2019t offered a competition slot.<\/p>\n

\n\tU.S director Lance Oppenheim, who directed buzzy HBO documentary series \u201cRen Faire,\u201d will be in Venice with A24-produced \u201cPrimetime\u201d starring Robert Pattinson as a journalist who takes on an underworld of crime and ends up changing television forever. <\/p>\n

\n\tAn under-the-radar-title from the U.S. indie trenches set to compete in Venice is Casey Affleck-directed Gothic mystery \u201cCompany\u201d starring Nick Nolte, Adelaide Clemens, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Emily Alyn Lind and Caylee Cowan. Set on a winter night in 1975, \u201cCompany\u201d involves parallel tales told by a mysterious woman named Evelyn who arrives uninvited at a holiday gathering. Her stories span across generations. It marks Affleck\u2019s third directorial feature and first since 2019\u2019s \u201cLight of My Life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe single Hollywood major studio title in the Venice selection is Disney\u2019s\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t Look Back in Anger\u201d which follows Oasis\u2019 recent reunion world tour and is touted as featuring the first joint interviews with Noel and Liam in over 25 years. \u201cDon\u2019t Look Back In Anger\u201d has been created by BAFTA and Oscar-nominated writer, producer, and director Steven Knight (\u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d) and is directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace (\u201cShut Up and Play the Hits,\u201d \u201cMeet Me in the Bathroom\u201d).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Oasis doc \u2013 which is playing in Venice as a special event \u2013 will open in IMAX venues and cinemas worldwide for a limited theatrical engagement beginning September 11th 2026, before streaming exclusively on Disney+ internationally and on Hulu and Disney+ in the U.S. later this year.<\/p>\n

\n\tRussell Crowe is expected in Venice for \u201cWhat Love Builds,\u201d his feature-length documentary chronicling performances and tours of his band \u201cIndoor Garden Party\u201d across Europe, the U.S,, UK, and Australia.<\/p>\n

\n\tLuc Besson-penned and produced action thriller \u201cFather Joe\u201d starring Kiefer Sutherland as a man of faith who wages a violent war against 1990s New York City\u2019s criminal underworld is among other out-of-competition titles. Al Pacino plays a powerful mob boss whose empire collides with Father Joe\u2019s crusade. Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my Grossmann (\u201cArthur: Malediction\u201d) directs. <\/p>\n

\n\tThen there is Paul Schrader\u2019s \u201cThe Basics of Philosophy\u201d about a philosophy professor, played by Jack Huston, who has been contending with guilt over a decision from his past when the victim suddenly returns to his life. Daniel Zovatto, Bill Pullman and Shiloh Fernandez and Sofia Boutella also star The drama is said to continue Schrader\u2019s \u201cman in a room\u201d stories that began with his script for Martin Scorsese\u2019s\u00a0\u201cTaxi Driver.\u201d These have also included Schrader\u2019s more recent features\u00a0\u201cFirst Reformed,\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe Card Counter\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cMaster Gardener.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOther out-of-competition standouts include Hungarian filmmaker Korn\u00e9l Mundrucz\u00f3\u2019s \u201cPlace to Be,\u201d starring Ellen Burstyn,\u00a0Taika Waititi, and Pamela Anderson. The drama which follows the unlikely friendship of an elderly woman and middle-aged man as they travel from Chicago to New York to return a lost racing pigeon home.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlex Gibney will bow his Elon Musk documentary \u201cMusk\u201d that\u2019s described as an epic investigation behind the public persona of one of the world\u2019s most influential and controversial business figures. <\/p>\n

\n\tBarbara Kopple will be in Venice with her new doc \u201cUnion Town,\u201d interweaving interconnected labor stories in and around New York City, involving delivery workers, including those working for Amazon, UPS and food-delivery apps.<\/p>\n

\n\tPalestinian director Ahmed Hassouna will be in Venice with doc \u201cCitizen Osama\u201d which portrays a photographer as he attempts to juggle his roles as father and a journalist while capturing the realities of war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

\n\tKurdish\/Norwegian director \u201cHiding Saddam Hussein\u201d will unveil his feature \u201cNo Paradise if You Are Killed by a Woman\u201d which follows a Kurdish-Norwegian female sniper who returns to the battlefield she once escaped, driven by vengeance and by the desperate hope of rescuing her younger sister, still imprisoned\u00a0by ISIS.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack to the competition. Veteran auteur Nanni Moretti leads a robust Italian contingent with \u201cIt Will Happen Tonight\u201d featuring French star Louis Garrel and\u00a0Italian A-lister Jasmine Trinca (\u201cLa Storia,\u201d \u201cSupersex\u201d). Though the plot is being kept under wraps, it\u2019s loosely based on the short story collection\u00a0\u201cHungry Heart\u201d\u00a0(Lev Raev) by Israeli writer Eshkol Nevo. \u201cHappen Tonight\u201d\u00a0will mark the first time in more than two decades that Moretti \u2013 who has had nine movies in competition at Cannes \u2013 will launch a movie from the Lido.<\/p>\n

\n\tChilean-Italian helmer\u00a0Marco Bechis (\u201cOlympic Garage\u201d) is competing with \u201cBack to Buenos Aires,\u201d his new drama about the crimes of the Argentine dictatorship.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Echo Chamber,\u201d the latest drama from Andrea Pallaoro starring Alicia Vikander and Luca Marinelli as enraptured lovers and featuring Susan Sarandon, based on an unfinished script by Bernardo Bertolucci, is among other Italian competition standouts. Italy\u2019s younger generation is also repped by Paolo Strippoli\u2019s high-concept thriller \u201cThe Spiral\u201d (\u201cL\u2019estranea\u201d) about a problematic mother-daughter relationship starring Jasmine Trinca and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and dark tragicomedy \u201cIl Fuoco che ti Porti Dentro\u201d by Edoardo De Angelis.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe copious French contingent comprises St\u00e9phane Briz\u00e9\u2019s \u201cA Good Little Soldier\u201d toplining Italy\u2019s Alba Rohrwacher as a woman navigating a corporate environment where vulnerability is not an asset. Vincent Lindon also stars. Then there is C\u00e9dric Kahn\u2019s \u201c15\/18\u201d (aka \u201cA Place to Heal\u201d) that is set in a French public hospital\u2019s adolescent psychiatry unit, and\u00a0Nicolas Pariser\u2019s \u201cA Bit Before Midnight\u201d with Melvil Poupaud as a man examining his life after his father dies. L\u00e9onie Simaga, Chiara Mastroianni, and Golshifteh Farahani also star.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAsian entries competing include Japanese festival circuit darling Hirokazu Kore-eda\u2019s \u201cLook Back,\u201d\u00a0a live-action adaptation of a Tatsuki Fujimoto manga story about two girls chasing their dreams of becoming manga artists. It marks Kore-eda\u2019s second premiere this year after his sci-fi fable \u201cSheep in the Box\u201d which competed at Cannes. There is also beloved Korean\u00a0helmer Lee Chang-dong\u2019s Netflix movie \u201cPossible Love\u201d that centers on two couples whose vastly different lifestyles create unexpected intersections. The film marks Chang-dong\u2019s first feature since 2018\u2019s \u201cBurning.\u201d And cult Japanese director\u00a0Shinya Tsukamoto\u2019s \u201cMr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?\u201d starring U.S. stage actor Rodney Hicks and Geoffrey Rush in a portrait of Vietnam veteran Allen Nelson.<\/p>\n

\n\tJapanese filmmaker Sabu\u2019s detective comedy\u00a0\u201cArrested Memory,\u201d\u00a0starring Taiwan\u2019s Ethan Juan, is screening out-of-competition.<\/p>\n

\n\tDanish-Egyptian director May el-Toukhy who made a splash with 2019 Sundance audience award-winner \u201cQueen of Hearts\u201d will bow post-WWII drama \u201cWoman, Unknown\u201d about a former housekeeper named Marie who while preparing to celebrate her engagement to the patriarch of the house, is haunted by secrets of her past. El-Toukhy, who has also directed episodes of Netflix\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe Crown,\u201d is the single female director in the 20-title competition.<\/p>\n

\n\tBerlin-based Ilya Khrzhanovsky will unveil the new entry in his monumental DAU project, which he spent over two and a half years finishing. \u201cDAU. Natasha\u201d and \u201cDAU. Degeneration\u201d previously premiered at the 2020 Berlinale. Khrzhanovsky renounced his Russian citizenship and has been an outspoken critic of Putin\u2019s regime. But he also faced allegations about the way he treated women on the set of \u201cDAU. Natasha.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIranian director who was in Venice Horizons last year with dark satire \u201cDivine Comedy,\u201d in back \u2013 in competition this time \u2013 with his new feature \u201cA Bit of Light.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOpening the Horizons section dedicated to more cutting-edge works is Alina Marazzi\u2019s \u201cLa Ragazza Con La Leica\u201d (\u201cThe Girl With the Leica\u201d) about war photographer\u00a0Gerda Taro, the first woman photojournalist killed in war who was also Robert Capa\u2019s muse<\/p>\n

\n\tAs previously announced, Maggie Gyllenhaal will preside over the jury. Gyllenhaal will also be presenting an out-of-competition short titled \u201cFlesh Impact\u201d with Ellen Burstyn, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Sepideh Moafi. She will be joined on the jury by Hong Kong filmmaking giant Johnnie To, Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat, French director and screenwriter Xavier Giannoli, \u201cThe Brutalist\u201d composer Daniel Blumberg and U.S.-based Italian film academic Francesco Casetti.<\/p>\n

\n\tGeorge Clooney and Ellen Burstyn will also be honored with lifetime achievement awards.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 83rd Venice Film Festival runs from Sept. 2 to 12. <\/p>\n
