Treat it as a fascinating clue, not a closed case.<\/p>\n<p>What the researchers actually found<\/p>\n<p>The work came out of Colorado State University and involved researchers from Save the Elephants and other organisations, led by behavioural ecologist Michael Pardo. His team used machine learning to examine a large archive of low, rumbling calls from wild elephants in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>They reported that these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-024-02420-w#:~:text=individually%20specific%20name-like%20calls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">calls contained individually specific, name-like<\/a> acoustic information associated with the particular animal each call was aimed at. When an elephant heard a call originally aimed at it, it tended to respond more strongly, vocalising sooner or approaching the speaker more quickly, than when it heard a call meant for someone else. That is an interpretation of their behaviour, and he presents it as one.<\/p>\n<p>What it does and doesn\u2019t tell us<\/p>\n<p>This is a single study, and the authors lean on words such as \u201csuggest\u201d and \u201cprobably\u201d rather than declaring the matter closed.<\/p>\n<p>A later published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-025-02823-3#:~:text=one%20of%20the%20data%20points\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">author correction<\/a> reported errors in playback data points. After the recordings were rescored, the results did not change qualitatively and remained statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p>What the work offers is carefully framed evidence, not a final verdict on how elephants think.<\/p>\n<p>Still, if the finding holds up, it raises an obvious question: why elephants?
