\n\tLloyd Lee Choi\u2019s \u201cLucky Lu<\/a>\u201d claimed best film at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards, presented during the closing ceremony of the 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest<\/a>) on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe U.S.-Canada co-production took the awards\u2019 top honor, while the jury recognized filmmakers from across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas in a ceremony that highlighted MIFFest\u2019s increasingly international competition.<\/p>\n

\n\tEgyptian filmmaker Morad Mostafa won best director for \u201cAisha Can\u2019t Fly Away,\u201d a multinational co-production spanning Egypt, France, Germany, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Sudan.<\/p>\n

\n\tChilean-Argentine-Italian drama \u201cThe Red Hangar\u201d emerged as one of the evening\u2019s biggest winners, taking both best screenplay for Luis Emilio Guzm\u00e1n and best cinematography for Diego Peguero. Accepting the cinematography prize, Peguero said: \u201cThis movie starts with a group of friends. I\u2019m very proud that we turned our passion into such a great film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSri Lankan drama \u201cRiverstone\u201d also collected two acting awards, with Mahendra Perera winning best actor and Priyantha Sirikumara taking best supporting actor. <\/p>\n

\n\tTaiwan picked up one of the night\u2019s acting honors as Audrey Lin won best supporting actress for \u201cGirl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe best actress award was shared by Ong Xuan Jing for Singapore\u2019s \u201cAh Girl\u201d and Lila Gueneau for \u201cSilent Rebellion.\u201d \u201cAh Girl\u201d also received the New Hope Award, recognizing director Ang Geck Geck Priscilla.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Audience Choice Award went to Spanish-French production \u201cSir\u00e2t,\u201d directed by Oliver Laxe.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe ceremony also honored Chinese actor, filmmaker and producer Wu Jing<\/a> with the Excellent Achievement Award. Wu attended the festival for a special screening of \u201cBlades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert,\u201d directed by Yuen Woo-ping. Accepting the honor, Wu thanked his collaborators and family, reserving his biggest thanks for his wife, whom he credited for her unwavering support throughout his career.<\/p>\n

\n\tKorean auteur Lee Chang-dong<\/a> received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Lee said on stage: \u201cI would like to accept this award not as a recognition, but as encouragement to keep making movies in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis year\u2019s awards reflected MIFFest\u2019s growing international reach, with winners representing North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Southeast Asian cinema also maintained a strong presence through honors for filmmakers from Singapore, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.<\/p>\n
