{"id":559694,"date":"2026-07-26T01:43:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T01:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/559694\/"},"modified":"2026-07-26T01:43:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T01:43:16","slug":"sperm-whales-blow-bubbles-to-achieve-restful-vertical-sleep-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/559694\/","title":{"rendered":"Sperm Whales blow bubbles to achieve restful, vertical sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmscdn.vuelio.co.uk\/publicitem\/61eae467-9527-4922-b967-b5d362f12998\" data-dmsasset=\"true\" data-filename=\"Sperm Whale rest.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New research<\/a>\u00a0from the University of St Andrews and Universite\u0301 de Neucha\u0302tel, has uncovered the mechanism which allows sperm whales to sleep in a unique vertical position, just under the ocean surface.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25895\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sperm-whale-vertical-rest-for-news-site-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sperm whales are the only whale known to rest vertically. It\u2019s thought to enable them to sleep effectively by buffering them from surface wave action, while avoiding the energy needed to dive to deeper depths. However, until now, it\u2019s been unclear how they maintained their position just below the sea surface.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper published today (23rd\u00a0July) in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jxb\/pages\/why-submit?utm_source=bing&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=8697na3df-8697na3jv-Tb-Gb-Fb-Ca-Ai&amp;campaign_id=522250057&amp;msclkid=253109f4ef3a139f805a63a93a1f8906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of Experimental Biology,<\/a>\u00a0researchers discovered that while resting, sperm whales release gas bubbles to help them regulate their buoyancy and remain below the sea surface. This regulation is crucial as Sperm Whales are positively buoyant naturally due to the large amounts of spermaceti oil in their heads. \u00a0Additionally, sperm whales are breath-hold divers, if they slowly drift up while resting, the gas in their lung will slowly expand, releasing bubbles enables them to counteract the expanding diving gas and achieve neutral buoyancy.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers were able to collect data from placing small tags using suction cups on Sperm Whales off the Norwegian coast.\u00a0 The tags record sound and 3-D animal movements.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dmscdn.vuelio.co.uk\/publicitem\/fc339eed-59fb-4246-93fe-d87974b6f092\" data-dmsasset=\"true\" data-filename=\"bubble_sample_amplified_noDC.wav\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clear bubble sounds<\/a>\u00a0were recorded by the tags, and animal movement data was used to create a simulation based on tissue density, drag through the water and gas volumes in their body.<\/p>\n<p>Results from the simulation confirmed that release of bubbles functioned to reduce the whales\u2019 positive buoyancy, enabling them to remain submerged while resting. Additionally, the results indicate that sperm whales start resting dives with less diving gas volume than for deep foraging dives.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Patrick Miller from the Sea Mammal Research Unit at the University of St Andrews said: \u201cThis study confirms that Sperm Whales exquisitely control their buoyancy by releasing gases to remain submerged with near-neutral buoyancy just below the sea surface.
