For the sixth time in its history, Pixar has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, as \u201cToy Story 5\u201d has reached the milestone on its sixth weekend in theaters after adding $34 million globally, including $10 million in North America.<\/p>\n
It was not a matter of if but when the fifth \u201cToy Story\u201d film would join its two most recent predecessors \u2014 \u201cToy Story 3\u201d in 2010 and \u201cToy Story 4\u201d in 2019 \u2014 in the $1 billion club after it reached a spectacular global opening weekend of $312 million. <\/p>\n
In the weeks that followed, it has proven to be the family film of choice this summer, holding strong against Universal\/Illumination\u2019s \u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d and Disney\u2019s own \u201cMoana\u201d remake, which has floundered as it has just passed the $200 million global mark after three weekends in theaters. <\/p>\n
The other three non-\u201cToy Story\u201d films to reach the $1 billion mark are the \u201cFinding Nemo\u201d prequel \u201cFinding Dory\u201d in 2016, the 2018 sequel \u201cIncredibles 2\u201d and the 2024 sequel \u201cInside Out 2,\u201d which was at one time the highest grossing animated movie ever. <\/p>\n
While \u201cToy Story 5\u201d won\u2019t reach the heights of \u201cInside Out 2,\u201d it will soon pass the $1.07 billion unadjusted global total of \u201cToy Story 4\u201d to set a new franchise record 31 years after the original \u201cToy Story\u201d hit theaters and established Pixar as one of the global titans of feature film animation. <\/p>\n
While it seemed like the tale of Woody, Buzz and the gang had been finished with \u201cToy Story 3,\u201d Pixar has now successfully gone to the well twice more without causing its flagship series to get branded with the \u201ccash grab\u201d reputation among the public that has fallen upon other franchises Hollywood has continued for one film too many. <\/p>\n
Tapping into fears of AI and tech taking over childhood at a time when social media bans are being weighed and implemented by world governments, \u201cToy Story 5\u201d sees Andy\u2019s former toys, now under the leadership of Jessie the Cowgirl, squaring off against Lilypad, a toy tablet given as a gift to their new kid owner, Bonnie.<\/p>\n
The film has been a huge success with kids and adults, earning Rotten Tomatoes scores of 92% critics and 94% audience, and has sustained the summer box office as films like \u201cMoana\u201d and \u201cSupergirl\u201d have failed to provide midsummer support. In the process, it has passed the other two billion-dollar hits of 2026, Universal\/Illumination\u2019s \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d and Lionsgate\/Universal\u2019s \u201cMichael\u201d to become the highest grossing film of the year.<\/p>\n
But it won\u2019t hold on to that title for long.
