Netflix has just announced a big new original comedy movie, Women Like Us, which will bring together a powerhouse cast of Hollywood legends including Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams, and Vivica A. Fox. Here\u2019s a rundown of everything we know so far about the upcoming feature.<\/p>\n
The new film marks the very first collaboration between two major production companies: MACRO Film Studios (founded by Charles D. King) and Higher Ground, the media company founded by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.<\/p>\n
Directing the feature is\u00a0Tasha Smith\u00a0(Bel-Air,\u00a0Harlem,\u00a0Mayor of Kingstown). If that name sounds familiar to Netflix subscribers, it\u2019s because Smith is already deeply embedded at Netflix already. Not only is she directing the upcoming Netflix film \u2018Tis So Sweet<\/a> (starring Taraji P. Henson and Joey Bada from Tyler Perry), but she\u2019s also a familiar face in front of the camera, starring in the comedy series Survival of the Thickest.<\/p>\n Women Like Us\u00a0is based on an original script by\u00a0Ali Kinney, who is best known to subscribers for writing on Netflix\u2019s massive hit series\u00a0Ginny & Georgia<\/a>.\u00a0Tracy Oliver\u00a0(Girls Trip,\u00a0The Blackening,\u00a0Harlem) is also on board for writing duties.<\/p>\n Producing the feature are James Lopez and Poppy Hanks for MACRO Film Studios alongside Anikah McLaren and Mark R. Wright for Higher Ground. Executive producing the movie are Michelle Obama for Higher Ground and Charles D. King for MACRO.<\/p>\n Higher Ground has been incredibly busy at Netflix lately.\u00a0Women Like Us\u00a0joins an expansive slate of recent and upcoming projects from the Obamas\u2019 production banner, including the hit apocalyptic thriller\u00a0Leave the World Behind<\/a>, the dark comedy series\u00a0Bodkin<\/a>,\u00a0Rustin<\/a>,\u00a0American Symphony,\u00a0Working: What We Do All Day, and the currently untitled Julianne Moore-led mother-daughter comedy. They are also working on the upcoming series\u00a0All the Sinners Bleed\u00a0and\u00a0The Altruists.<\/p>\n MACRO Film Studios is equally decorated, having co-financed and developed premium features that have netted 15 Academy Award nominations and three wins over the years. Netflix fans will best know the studio for their work on the fan-favorite sci-fi conspiracy romp\u00a0They Cloned Tyrone\u00a0and the acclaimed drama\u00a0Mudbound.<\/p>\n What is the plot of\u00a0Women Like Us?<\/p>\n Netflix has provided a brief logline for the new movie, which promises a heartfelt and hilarious journey:<\/p>\n \u201cWhen a recently widowed woman is dragged to the Hamptons by her lifelong best friends and sister on what should have been her 30th anniversary, the weekend becomes a reckoning, with grief, with marriage, with the sisterhood that\u2019s carried them throughout the years, and with the realization that dreams don\u2019t have an expiration date.\u201d<\/p>\n Who is in the cast of\u00a0Women Like Us?<\/p>\n As announced, the comedy boasts a true all-star lineup of veteran actresses:<\/p>\n Whoopi Goldberg\u00a0(The Color Purple,\u00a0Sister Act) When will\u00a0Women Like Us\u00a0enter production?<\/p>\n According to the initial announcement,\u00a0Women Like Us is slated to begin production this Fall. Filming will take place in New York City. Our intel suggests it\u2019s aiming for a single-month shoot between September 22nd and October 31st, with the movie going under the working title Women of a Certain Vintage.<\/p>\n Given the late 2026 production timeline, we can comfortably expect\u00a0Women Like Us\u00a0to land on Netflix sometime in late 2027 or early 2028.
