SEOUL, July 28 (Reuters) – South Korea’s top financial regulator said on Tuesday that authorities would \u200cconsider a cap on single-stock leveraged exchange-traded \u200cfunds (ETF) investments for retail investors if needed, local media reports \u200bsaid. <\/p>\n
Lee Eog-weon, chairman of the Financial Services Commission, told a meeting with local brokerages and asset managers in Seoul that the regulator would review and \u200cprepare additional measures \u2060to curb the demand for the ETF products, such as putting a cap \u2060on total value of investments for each individual. <\/p>\n
The Korean regulator last week raised the cash deposit required \u200bfor retail \u200binvestors to invest \u200bsuch ETFs, tied mostly \u200cto either of the country’s two biggest stocks and semiconductor makers \u2014 Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. <\/p>\n
Shares of Samsung Electronics plunged as much as 9.7% in Seoul on Tuesday on concerns that the Korean \u200cmemory-chip maker may lose market \u200bshares to Chinese rival CXMT \u200band over financing \u200brisks tied to AI infrastructure spending. <\/p>\n
Shares \u200cof peer SK Hynix, which \u200brecently listed \u200bits American Depositary Receipts in the U.S., slumped as much as 11.2% on Tuesday in \u200bSeoul. The \u200cADR fell 10% on Nasdaq on Monday to \u200bbelow its IPO price. <\/p>\n
