It\u2019s why I believe contemporary art is a space where we can unpack and engage in difficult conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a delicate needle to thread. Recent biennials in <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/art-and-design\/smoke-bombs-let-off-in-protest-against-russia-at-venice-biennale-20260506-p5zuhi.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venice<\/a> and <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/art-and-design\/australia-s-biggest-arts-festival-reported-to-police-as-supporter-withdraws-20260317-p5ocp8.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney<\/a> have drawn flak for allegedly prioritising political posturing over beauty, wonder and emotional depth.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney\u2019s latest edition faced fierce backlash over claims it sidelined Jewish artists in favour of pro-Palestinian voices, leading to an official complaint \u2013 later dropped by police \u2013 <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/art-and-design\/festival-responds-as-sponsors-and-supporters-targeted-over-opening-night-dj-controversy-20260319-p5qhs8.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over a DJ\u2019s allegedly incendiary opening-night remarks<\/a> at White Bay Power Station.<\/p>\n<p>Low remains unfazed by the friction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the strength of contemporary art,\u201d he says. \u201cIt carves out a space for nuanced discussion and deep listening. It\u2019s not always about agreeing but about preserving a space for conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, that\u2019s vital to protect. It\u2019s about raising awareness and consciousness but, ultimately, it\u2019s also about accountability and responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Few know the dangers of navigating the line between art and activism better than Low. The founder of the Singapore Biennale, he was head of theatre and performing arts at Hong Kong\u2019s West Kowloon Cultural District Authority during the pro-democracy <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/hong-kongs-umbrella-revolution-20140929-3gw86.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Umbrella Movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For one production, he staged the personal stories and perspectives of 100 Hong Kong citizens. During an open-mic session attended by a media reviewer, outspoken remarks were made, leaving Low panicked: \u201cI thought, \u2018I\u2019m going to be put in jail. I\u2019m dead.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later came a glowing review.<\/p>\n<p>Low has not ruled out bringing Ai Weiwei\u2019s Manchester exhibition, which the 48-hour performance anchored,to Sydney.
