July 28 (Reuters) – The U.S. government should not block Chinese models to gain an edge in \u200cthe AI<\/a> race, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg \u200ctold the Financial Times in an interview published on Tuesday, as Washington \u200bwarns that Chinese companies could face penalties over the alleged theft of U.S. technology. <\/p>\n

Zuckerberg said that banning cutting-edge Chinese AI would not be “an effective solution,” adding that \u200cU.S. companies should “systematically” identify \u2060bottlenecks and roadblocks in order to better compete with Chinese AI firms. <\/p>\n

Beijing-based Moonshot AI, \u2060whose recently released Kimi K3 model has drawn attention for its coding capabilities, has intensified debate in Washington \u200bover whether \u200bChinese developers are copying \u200bU.S. models or rapidly \u200cclosing the technological gap through their own research. <\/p>\n

The Trump administration on Tuesday unveiled bans that target imports of new Chinese robots and power inverters, seeking to protect the U.S. AI buildout from national security threats and \u200creshore key industries slated for \u200bexplosive growth. <\/p>\n

Separately, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott \u200bBessent has warned \u200bthat Chinese companies could face financial sanctions \u200cor placement on the Commerce \u200bDepartment’s Entity List, \u200bwhich restricts access to U.S. technology. <\/p>\n

When asked for a comment on the FT interview, Meta referred \u200bto an opinion \u200cpiece by Zuckerberg in the Wall Street Journal. <\/p>\n
