That brings Detective Grayson (Paul Schneider) to the Bowden home with several other cops and a Denver omelet’s worth of egg on his face, to announce that Cady assaulted the officer and is currently on the loose. (“Sorry, we fucked up” is all he can offer.) Given the absolute certainty that Cady is beelining to the Bowden manse with the intention of murdering the entire family, you might expect a humbled Grayson to spare a cop or two to protect them, even if Hurricane Wesley is stretching their resources. But that doesn’t happen. He merely nods at Tom pulling a shotgun from the gun safe for protection and trusts they’ll evacuate quickly before the storm hits.

It’s all part of a truly ridiculous path toward the confrontation Cape Fear has been building toward from the beginning, where Cady can finally terrorize the entire family at once, and they can fight back directly. It’s also a worst-case scenario for a series that’s been hampered by clunky plotting throughout its ten-episode run, but has mostly gotten by on juicy performances, robust gothic style, and a fevered maximalism that has kept it compelling from the start. For all the issues inherent in stretching a story to roughly five times the length of the Cape Fear movies, momentum has never been an issue with this series. You might question, at times, why the characters act the way they do or why you’re drifting down one plot tributary or another, but showrunner Nick Antosca and his team have put a premium on action. You could not yawn your way through it.

Yet the finale pays a steep toll for all the show’s accumulated sins, rushing through big revelations and frantically tying up loose ends like a Florsheim’s. The silliness begins right where the penultimate episode left off, with Cady arriving at Crystal’s houseboat just as Anna had slipped off into the river under cover of darkness. Crystal knows that her brother — and we can now definitely say that they’re siblings — will not be pleased by this development, so she tries to defuse the situation by stalling him (“Aren’t you going to say ‘hello’ first?”) and making a nostalgic appeal to happier times (“I remember when you used to take walks along the river and I would follow you …”). In her defense, it was never going to be easy to let Cady know that Anna got away, but her conversational feint is comically ineffectual, like erecting a dam of twigs in front of Niagara Falls.

The spasm of violence that follows is genuinely shocking. Cady responds to Crystal’s pleas by strangling and shooting her, then locking Crystal and Luke together in the hold. He locks up his defiant father, too, in a cage like a dog, before pouring gasoline on him and the houseboat, and lighting the entire thing on fire, wiping them all out at once. He’s come to regret his haste later when Anna shocks him with the news that Luke was his son with Melissa and that Crystal had saved the boy before his wife expired. But for now, Cady has moved past the point of tormenting his adversaries and intends to kill all of them, which is pretty much every major character in the cast besides Nevaeh, who’s still vaguely attached to him as her father.

What happens next is a strange leap in terms of tone and location, to the point where it feels like a dream sequence. Cady cannot track down Anna up in North Carolina. She successfully stumbles out onto a local road and hitches a ride with a nice family that takes her to her car. Without accounting for how they both got back to Savannah, the show cuts abruptly to a crisp-dressed Cady speaking outside his new restaurant, Melissa and Adam, as well-wishers gather around, some wearing “Max Is a Victim” T-shirts. The scene is a callback of sorts to a scene early in the series when Cady interrupted Anna’s speech at a fundraising gala, and now it’s Anna who gets to do the interrupting. In a coordinated public attack, Anna presents audio that Natalie surreptitiously recorded in prison, where Nevaeh told her that Cady is “not going to stop until he destroys your entire family,” and then Noa tag-teams with a second recording of Cady convincing his mistress to shoot herself.

Anna and Noa’s recordings are enough to get Cady arrested on the spot — him trying to strangle her to death in front of his fans seals the deal — but the whole scene feels oddly wedged into place. There’s even a break in the weather, as if Cady’s restaurant opening is happening in the eye of a hurricane that will resume shortly afterward. The Bowdens all returning home together, too, feels like a sloppy piece of dramatic convenience, especially Zack’s return from the institution, which we’d been led to believe that Cady orchestrated but in fact was just the boy wanting to go back home. Zack’s mental state is unresolved, which adds a layer of tension to the climactic confrontation, but it feels like another cheat to have escaped the institution on his own. He looks borderline catatonic when Natalie finds him skulking around in the yard.

The “trial” that Cady stages with the Bowdens tied up — or, in Zack’s case, under the influence — allows Javier Bardem to vamp, which is engaging enough, though his Cady never emerges as distinctly as Robert Mitchum’s laconic stalker in the ’62 version or Robert De Niro’s hilarious cartoon hick in the ’91 one. “You built your life of privilege off of me” is a strong indictment of the Bowdens’ conspiracy to put him in prison after they discovered the deadlocked jury might let him walk. Yet at this point, their ethical lapses are no longer anything to fret over, since we just watched Cady burn three people to death, and he can’t say something like, “whatever I am today, you made me” to the Bowdens with any plausibility whatsoever. Cady may not have killed everyone directly, but he’s responsible for a lot of murders that have nothing to do with Tom and Anna.

The sliver of redemption for Tom and Anna is a mutual commitment to the rule of law. Given the opportunity to drown Cady in the pool, with Natalie screaming for them to kill him, the Bowdens instead try to set a good example by renewing their faith in the law. (Kudos to the show for not going to the slasher-movie route and having Cady renew his attack on the Bowdens when he regains consciousness.) It seems too tidy a getaway for the family, which may have to look over its collective shoulder for a while, but can otherwise make a clean return to their life of privilege. Must be nice.

• Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” is an interesting track to close out the episode, beyond being my favorite song off my favorite album by my favorite musician.
