It tells the story of a young boy in 1987 grappling with the discovery of the shocking news that his father is gay. \u201cTell Me Everything\u201d (titled \u201cIndependence\u201d in Hebrew) is nominated for best picture, best director, best screenplay, best actor, best actress and several other nods.<\/p>\n
Also competing in the best picture category is Avi Nesher\u2019s \u201cOur Loves<\/a>,\u201d which follows an ensemble of characters whose stories intertwine during the October 7 Hamas onslaught into Israel\u2019s south, featuring the stories of kibbutz dwellers, Nova partiers, police officers and more.<\/p>\n The category also includes \u201cWhere To?<\/a>\u201d \u2014 an Israeli-German film that centers on a Palestinian Uber driver living in Berlin who picks up a young lost Israeli, and premiered in February at the Berlinale Film Festival \u2014 and \u201cMama,\u201d about a Polish woman who returns to her family after years of working as a housekeeper in Israel.<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel’s Daily Edition \t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the terms<\/a><\/p>\n Rounding out the category is\u00a0\u201cHome,\u201d written, directed and starring Reut Akkerman, and \u201cThe Wedding Entertainer<\/a>,\u201d directed by Gidi Dar and written and starring Shuli Rand, who previously collaborated on the popular \u201cUshpizin.\u201d<\/p>\n \t The winner of the Ophir Awards prize for best picture generally goes on to become Israel\u2019s submission for best foreign film at the Academy Awards.<\/p>\n The selection of last year\u2019s winner<\/a>, \u201cThe Sea,\u201d about a Palestinian boy longing to visit the sea for the first time in his life, led Culture Minister Miki Zohar to announce he was cutting all state funding to the ceremony and\u00a0establishing his own<\/a> alternate awards ceremony which was cloaked in<\/a> controversy.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Sea\u201d ultimately was not nominated for the category at the Oscars. Israeli films have been nominated 10 times for best international feature film \u2014 most recently with 2011\u2019s \u201cFootnote\u201d \u2014 but has never won.<\/p>\n \u201cOur Loves\u201d was nominated for 12 Ophir Awards in total, as was \u201cThe Wedding Entertainer,\u201d while \u201cMama\u201d and \u201cWhere To?\u201d each picked up 11 nominations.<\/p>\n The Ophir Awards ceremony, organized by the Israel Academy of Film and Television, is slated for September 9.<\/p>\n \t The nominees for best documentary film include \u201cShalom,\u201d about Palestinian and Israeli employees at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo dealing with the impending death of a beloved rhinoceros.<\/p>\n The best short documentary nominations include \u201cAlon, My Brother the Hero,\u201d about the journey of Ido and Yonatan Shamriz to bring home their brother, slain Hamas captive Alon Shamriz<\/a>; \u201cChildren No More: Were and are Gone,\u201d about Israeli activists protesting the killing of children in Gaza; and \u201cAhmad the Movie Star,\u201d focusing on the controversy surrounding the 1966 film \u201cI Am Ahmad,\u201d considered the first Israeli movie to tell the story of an Arab character.<\/p>\n
