The group Red Velvet is releasing a full group album for the first time in two years and two months.

Their agency SM Entertainment announced on August 3 that Red Velvet will release their summer mini-album “Velvet Summer” at 6 p.m. This marks their first full-group album since “Cosmic,” which was released in June 2024.

The album includes five tracks centered around the summer theme, including the title track “Surfin’ Boy.” Unlike their previous summer songs known for their energetic style, Red Velvet has focused on a more laid-back and mature atmosphere this time.

“Surfin’ Boy” is a dance song that features the characteristics of bossa nova. Dreamy vocal harmonies are layered over a refreshing melody. The lyrics tell a story about recalling the hottest summer and creating new memories.

Joy, who wrote the lyrics, remarked, “I expressed the feelings I wanted to share with both Red Velvet and our fans through the lyrics. I wanted to convey the sentiment that every time we meet again, we can build more beautiful and wonderful memories than before.”

Seulgi commented about the title track, “As soon as I heard the demo, I immediately thought of Red Velvet’s voices. If our previous summer songs highlighted a powerful and energetic mood, this time we aimed for an ambiance that feels like looking at the beach at sunset.”

Wendy described the overall vibe of the album as “a languid and mature summer.” She said, “Summer has its hot and lively moments, but there are days when you just want to spend time leisurely doing nothing. Through this, I wanted to showcase Red Velvet’s diverse musical colors.”

The b-side track “Hula Hoop” is an upbeat and bright summer song. Yeri said, “I instantly thought of summer as soon as I heard it. It felt like the perfect track to listen to while driving or traveling.”

To coincide with their album release, Red Velvet held a fan concert titled “A Day in Red & Velvet” at Hwajeong Gymnasium, Korea University in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, from July 31 to August 2.

During the performances, they unveiled the stages for “Surfin’ Boy” and “Hula Hoop” for the first time. They also performed signature hits such as “Dumb Dumb,” “Bad Boy,” “RBB (Really Bad Boy),” and “Psycho,” alongside album tracks including “Bulldozer,” “Huff N Puff,” “Blue Lemonade,” and “Hit That Drum.”

On August 1, the members celebrated their debut anniversary with the audience by cutting a cake together, marking their 12th year since debut. Red Velvet began their career on August 1, 2014, with their debut song “Happiness.”
