Minker et al.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-76c7b9da-8f41-11f1-9692-f592d45a0cb8\">New images reveal what astronomers believe is the first-known &#8220;trilobate&#8221; or three-headed asteroid in our solar system.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-121b3d34-8f43-11f1-aefa-4765672f2a38\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-121b3d98-8f43-11f1-a8f9-0d5426ebdde0\">These new images capture the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a> known as (44) Nysa, or just Nysa, as it spins through the main <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16105-asteroid-belt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid belt<\/a> located between Mars and Jupiter. The images were captured with the Very Large Telescope in Chile and the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-121b3d98-8f43-11f1-a8f9-0d5426ebdde0-1\">Nysa was first observed in 1857, but it wasn&#8217;t until the new images were captured when scientists were able to resolve its unique three-headed structure. The asteroid appears to be around 47 miles (75 kilometers) in circumference at its widest point, with two narrow &#8220;necks&#8221; that give it its odd &#8220;trilobate&#8221; shape.<\/p>\n<p>Even more incredible, astronomers were also able to resolve that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/1st-three-headed-asteroid-found-in-our-solar-system-and-it-has-a-little-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/1st-three-headed-asteroid-found-in-our-solar-system-and-it-has-a-little-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/1st-three-headed-asteroid-found-in-our-solar-system-and-it-has-a-little-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 0.6-mile-wide (1-km-wide) moon<\/a> seems to orbit Nysa. (Image credit: Kate Minker et al.)<a id=\"elk-1a998320-8f44-11f1-8e99-239befa7fbea\"\/>Why is it incredible?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1a99838e-8f44-11f1-b59e-d7d2b25d6194\">Astronomers say these images reveal (44) Nysa to be unlike any other asteroid we&#8217;ve seen in our neck of the cosmic woods.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The images reveal a remarkably unusual object,&#8221; said Kate Minker of Arizona&#8217;s Lowell Observatory in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/lowell.edu\/press-release-asteroid-44-nysa-may-be-the-first-known-three-lobed-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/lowell.edu\/press-release-asteroid-44-nysa-may-be-the-first-known-three-lobed-world\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a> announcing the discovery. &#8220;The most likely explanation is that Nysa is either a contact trinary, consisting of three connected components, or an extremely irregular coherent body unlike anything we&#8217;ve previously observed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scientists can study asteroids like Nysa to learn about how the planets of our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> formed.
