But the world spends 30 times more money destroying nature than protecting it, and Africa often lacks the necessary resources to address the crisis, the head of the UN\u2019s Biodiversity Convention warned this week at a major scientific forum in Nairobi.<\/p>\n
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. In addition to maintaining natural ecosystems, having a variety of species \u2013 both flora and fauna \u2013 also supports human survival through food and medicine.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to biodiversity, we have food. Biodiversity gives us clean water. It helps us fight climate change. It makes us more resilient,\u201d Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity Astrid Schomaker told UN News. \u201cAll these issues matter to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Africa is home to 25 per cent of the world\u2019s biodiversity but has also lost about 24 per cent of its species since the pre-industrial period, according to a recent study.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The continent is uniquely impacted by biodiversity loss because many people rely on its bountiful natural resources to earn a living.<\/p>\n
Ms. Schomaker said climate change is the single biggest driver, and Africa is especially vulnerable to climate shocks.<\/p>\n
But because of massive government subsidies for fossil fuels and private industrial spending around the world, biodiversity loss outpaces efforts to protect it, UN Environment Programme,\u00a0UNEP, warned earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ms. Schomaker said rising temperatures, invasive species, pollution and overexploitation of land and water all deplete the resources rural and coastal communities rely on for food, income and clean water.<\/p>\n From science to funding<\/p>\n If the recent meeting of the UN\u2019s Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice identified biodiversity loss as a problem, the Subsidiary Body on Implementation \u2013 meeting until 12 August in Nairobi \u2013 will focus on how to solve it.<\/p>\n Negotiators are now working through how to embed biodiversity into national decision-making, draw financial institutions into the conversation and raise the money needed to close the gap.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a very solid understanding of where we are,\u201d Ms. Schomaker said. \u201cAnd now it is taking this understanding of where we are and translating it into recommendations on how we can move forward faster.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a9 UN Nairobi Cautious optimism ahead of COP17<\/p>\n Despite alarming figures, reports submitted to UNEP<\/a> by 125 countries show strong global engagement on solving the crisis of diversity loss.<\/p>\n In fact, whether it be planting a tree, creating insect havens or avoiding harmful chemicals, UNEP says everyone has a role to play in protecting biodiversity.<\/p>\n The recommendations from the two Nairobi conventions will inform Member States\u2019 negotiations and decisions at COP17, the biennial meeting of parties to the Biodiversity Convention, which begins on 19 October.<\/p>\n This year in Yerevan, Armenia, countries will review progress toward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework<\/a>, adopted at COP15<\/a> as a roadmap to reverse biodiversity loss and help people live in better harmony with nature.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is our biggest challenge: How can we turn this around?\u201d Ms. Schomaker said. \u201cHow can we make everybody understand that biodiversity matters for them \u2013 that destroying biodiversity means you essentially destroy what you are building your lives on, and then make the right decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"But the world spends 30 times more money destroying nature than protecting it, and Africa often lacks the…\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":575463,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[242,85,46,141],"class_list":["post-575462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-science"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/575462","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=575462"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/575462\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/575463"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=575462"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=575462"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=575462"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
