(Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU\/MSSS\/SSI)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-02360d12-90f7-11f1-a160-092a4ebd4ea6\">NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/perseverance-rover-mars-2020-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Perseverance rover<\/a> witnessed a rare event recently, when Earth briefly disappeared behind Mars&#8217; moon Phobos in the Red Planet sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-02360d8a-90f7-11f1-91f1-6f2520b9a1b7\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-02360e34-90f7-11f1-8331-5b0bc55cb8b8\">These new composite images were released by NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and taken on July 2, 2026, the 1,907th Martian day of Perseverance&#8217;s mission. They consist of nine different images taken by the rover&#8217;s Mastcam-Z instrument as it pointed up into the hazy Martian sky, watching our planet, seen here as a pale dot, cross behind the Mars moon <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phobos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This type of event is known as an occultation, from the Latin word occultare, meaning &#8220;to hide.&#8221; On Earth, the most common type of occultation occurs when our moon passes in front of background stars or when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/saturn-moon-occultation-astrophotographer-photo-august-2024\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/saturn-moon-occultation-astrophotographer-photo-august-2024\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/saturn-moon-occultation-astrophotographer-photo-august-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">planets pass behind the moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mars has two moons, Phobos and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deimos<\/a>. Phobos is the larger and innermost moon.
