Wildlife watchers in Botswana have shared sightings of lions on the hunt \u2013 but the outcome might not be what you expect with their supposed victim walking away safe and sound.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSeeing these battles play out is often difficult to watch, but also incredibly special,\u201d says Julian Carter-Manning, founder of safari company\u00a0Yellow Zebra<\/a>, who shared the video.<\/p>\n In the footage, several\u00a0lions<\/a>\u00a0chase a large hippopotamus into the water, with one even trying to claw at its rump. But\u00a0hippos<\/a>\u00a0can grow to several tonnes and aren\u2019t to be messed with.\u00a0<\/p>\n This hippo clearly wasn\u2019t in the mood to become anyone\u2019s lunch and turns round menacingly as if to warn the young lions to steer clear. They dutifully back away and loiter somewhat nervously nearby before settling down to take a drink from the waterline.\u00a0<\/p>\n Watch: Lions vs hippo. Credit: Julian Carter-Manning, founder of Yellow Zebra<\/p>\n Most of the lions in the videos are young adults trying to improve their hunting skills for adulthood, according to Carter-Manning: \u201cYoung lions that are honing their skills on large prey [see] a taste for big game in the future; they\u2019ll be a ferocious pride.\u201d<\/p>\n This spectacular sighting took place in a private reserve in Botswana. \u201cThey\u2019re utterly pristine ecosystems that guarantee off-road driving and very few other vehicles\u2026if any,\u201d says Carter-Manning.\u00a0<\/p>\n On this occasion, the group of roughly seven lions weren\u2019t successful.
