They don\u2019t affect the underlying disease, but they may help improve memory, thinking, day-to-day functioning, and alertness for a period of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[1]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Dr. Koppel compares them to \u201ctuning a radio to make the signal clearer.\u201d They help the brain\u2019s remaining nerve cells communicate better, making it easier to think and remember.<\/p>\n<p>Newer, disease-modifying treatments, known as anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies, are designed to help slow the progression of Alzheimer\u2019s disease in some people. They work by targeting <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/alzheimers-disease\/beta-amyloid-what-is-its-role-in-alzheimers-disease\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beta-amyloid<\/a>, a protein that can build up in the brain and is thought to contribute to Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>These treatments are only prescribed for certain people with early Alzheimer\u2019s disease, including those with <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/alzheimers-disease\/mild-cognitive-impairment\/guide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mild cognitive impairment<\/a> or mild dementia. Treatments require regular injections or infusions, MRI scans, and follow-up visits to monitor for side effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[1]<\/p>\n<p class=\"view-sources\">[2]<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re also experiencing other issues that often <a class=\"cr-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/neurological-disorders\/addressing-these-conditions-may-help-you-live-better-with-alzheimers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">co-occur with Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, such as agitation,\u00a0anxiety, depression, or sleep problems, your healthcare provider may recommend additional medications. These treatments are aimed at managing specific issues and improving quality of life, not treating Alzheimer\u2019s disease itself.
