{"id":579605,"date":"2026-08-09T16:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T16:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/579605\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T16:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T16:04:09","slug":"how-spaceflight-changes-astronauts-ability-to-eat-and-drink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/579605\/","title":{"rendered":"How spaceflight changes astronauts&#8217; ability to eat and drink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Imagine trying to swallow a sip of water while your face feels stuffed with congestion, your sense of taste is dulled and your body is floating 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">That scenario is part of everyday life for astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Spaceflight <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/even-short-trips-to-space-can-change-an-astronauts-biology-a-new-set-of-studies-offers-the-most-comprehensive-look-at-spaceflight-health-since-nasas-twins-study-232967\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changes the human body<\/a> in dramatic ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/the-human-body-in-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Muscles shrink, bones lose density<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.tottori-u.ac.jp\/yam\/yam\/yam46-1\/46_001-008.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bodily fluids shift toward the head<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.tottori-u.ac.jp\/yam\/yam\/yam46-1\/46_001-008.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astronauts often return<\/a> with puffy faces, stuffy noses and a feeling similar to a lingering cold. When everything\u2019s working smoothly, swallowing feels effortless, but it is one of the most complex actions the human body performs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Every swallow requires more than <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00455-010-9301-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30 muscles and several nerves<\/a> to work in perfect sequence. Food and liquid must move from the mouth to the stomach while the airway closes in a fraction of a second to keep material out of the lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Most people complete this process <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnuh.nhs.uk\/departments\/speech-and-language-therapy\/swallowing\/the-normal-swallow\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of times a day<\/a> without noticing. In space, that automatic act may become more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>Gravity quietly helps us eat<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Swallowing does not depend on gravity. People can swallow while lying down, and astronauts clearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/nasa-space-food-chew-swallow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eat and drink in orbit<\/a>. But gravity still provides subtle assistance. On Earth, it helps saliva pool in the mouth and pushes food and liquid down from the mouth to your esophagus after each swallow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Gravity also affects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/station\/cardiovascular-health-in-microgravity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">where fluids collect<\/a> in the body. In microgravity, where objects appear to be weightless, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renalfellow.org\/2021\/09\/26\/body-fluid-regulation-from-microgravity-to-gravity-is-aestivation-the-key-player\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fluids drift upward<\/a> toward the head, which can cause swelling, nasal congestion and changes in pressure around the mouth and throat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Researchers have documented that <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.lssr.2020.07.009\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weightlessness affects many parts of the digestive system<\/a>, from the mouth to the intestines. But they are only beginning to explore what these changes mean for chewing, swallowing and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Why food feels and tastes different in space<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Many astronauts say <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/1541-4337.12633\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food in space can seem less satisfying<\/a> than it does on Earth. Congestion reduces your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/smell-disorders\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sense of smell<\/a>, which normally contributes greatly to flavor, and some foods may lack familiar textures such as crunch. When your nose is blocked, even your favorite foods can seem dull.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.lssr.2020.07.009\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astronauts also commonly eat less<\/a> than expected and may lose weight during missions. Eating less while in space can pose a problem because nutrition is essential for maintaining muscle strength, immune function and mental performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Research suggests that microgravity and other aspects of spaceflight may <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S1473550420000105\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alter saliva production and oral health<\/a>, likely because fluid shifts, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41526-024-00374-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dehydration<\/a> and changes in the body\u2019s stress response can affect the salivary glands. These factors can <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.7759\/cureus.66591\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increase the risk of dental problems<\/a> and discomfort during long missions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Saliva does much <a href=\"https:\/\/penndentalmedicine.org\/blog\/treating-salivary-gland-stones-and-dry-mouth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than keep the mouth moist<\/a>. It softens food, helps form it into a cohesive mass and allows it to move smoothly through the throat. It also protects the teeth and oral tissues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Anyone who has experienced dry mouth knows that crackers can feel like sand and swallowing can become surprisingly difficult. A dry mouth on Earth is inconvenient. During a long-duration mission to Mars, it could interfere with eating and drinking for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/bridging-the-gap-nasa-studies-the-human-body-in-space-for-one-year-to-extrapolate-for-missions-to-mars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">round-trip mission to Mars<\/a>, including travel and time on the planet\u2019s surface, could last two to three years. During that time, astronauts will live far from hospitals, specialists and emergency evacuation options. Every aspect of human health matters, including the ability to eat and drink comfortably enough to maintain nutrition and hydration.<\/p>\n<p>Space food is changing<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Early astronauts squeezed pur\u00e9ed food from tubes. Today, crews enjoy a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/ochmo\/food-in-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wide variety of foods<\/a>, including tortillas, spicy shrimp cocktails, rehydratable macaroni and cheese, and occasional treats such as brownies, cookies and fresh fruit delivered by cargo spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Scientists are also developing <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.lssr.2023.08.002\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3D-printed foods<\/a> that can be customized to meet nutritional needs and improve variety on long missions. This technology could one day make it possible to tailor food textures if an astronaut has difficulty chewing or swallowing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Researchers are also exploring how technologies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1044\/2022_AJSLP-21-00391\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3D food printing<\/a> could build on the texture-modified diets already used in hospitals and rehabilitation centers to help people with swallowing difficulties eat more safely and comfortably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">As humans prepare to return to the Moon and journey onward to Mars, even the simple act of swallowing could play a small but important role in whether those missions succeed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">This article was originally published on <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Conversation<\/a>.
