Within hours, footage of the Udinese and Nigeria goalkeeper was all over TikTok and Instagram – where his audience now stretches to nearly two million followers – transforming the appearance into a viral cultural moment that crossed beyond the boundaries of football.

Yet ask Okoye to reflect on his sudden explosion into the fashion ecosystem, and he frames it not as a pursuit of celebrity or status, but as a genuine interest in art. “Being at the Paris fashion week was really impressive,” Okoye says. “It was my first time really coming into contact with high fashion, and it was fascinating. It’s a true art form. I enjoyed it immensely and since that moment I’ve become a much bigger fan of fashion than I was before.”

In an era where elite footballers are expected to be multi-dimensional figures – balancing performance on the pitch, personal branding, digital presence, and commercial partnerships – Okoye embodies a generation navigating this global landscape with ease. Crucially, he knows exactly where to steer the ship.

While some athletes run the danger of losing their bearings when the off-pitch spotlight intensifies, the goalkeeper draws a sharp, impenetrable line between his two realms.

“What happens off the pitch is one thing, what happens on the pitch is another,” he says. “You have to separate the two. I never let these two worlds collide. Even though marketing and personal branding are part of the business today, at the end of the day I am a goalkeeper, and my main job is to protect my team’s goal. Outside football, I pursue things that matter to me but my priority and my work remain between the posts. These two worlds don’t overlap. What I do off the pitch has zero impact on what I do on it, and those two spheres will never cross.”

Reinforcing that boundary is the daily environment in which Okoye operates. Playing for Udinese, nestled in the calm, industrious region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, creates a vivid contrast with the flashing cameras of Paris or the hyper-fast churn of social media trends. For Okoye, who grew up in Düsseldorf, Udine offers an essential sanctuary.

Maduka Okoye arrived at Udinese after spells at Sparta Rotterdam and Watford. Photograph: Foto Petrussi/Udinese FC

“I grew up in a big city, so in my heart I am and always will be a city boy, used to the metropolitan rhythm,” he smiles. “However, as you grow older, you learn to appreciate the peaceful side of life. I really like Udine. It’s a human, quiet city. You have your peace there and you can focus 100% on your work. I’m genuinely happy to live here. The serenity in Udine is good for you as a person and makes you feel very comfortable.”

That quiet focus away from the noise is paying dividends on the pitch. Having arrived after spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Watford – where he only made two senior appearances – he has established himself as a cornerstone between the posts for Udinese. In a footballing landscape often obsessed with highlight-reel saves, Okoye is staying focused.

“I believe there is always room for improvement in every direction,” he says. “I’m very happy working here with a great goalkeeping staff. I’m on a good path, learning every day, and I can’t wait to show it on the pitch during the season.”

When asked which goalkeeper impressed him most during the recent World Cup, Okoye says: “I found Spain’s Unai Simón very impressive, especially towards the final stages. Not so much for making hundreds of saves, but for the way he remained inside the game, defending deep balls against France. For me, that was goalkeeping of the highest level.

“As I said, it’s not just about spectacular saves; it’s about managing those details. Overall it was a great World Cup, and for us young goalkeepers it was a fantastic learning opportunity.”

Okoye’s drive to absorb lessons from top-tier athletes extends beyond football. During a recent visit to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, he met rising Italian Formula One driver Kimi Antonelli, taking the opportunity to study the mechanics of another high-level sport.

“It was fantastic. The whole Formula One experience was extraordinary,” Okoye says. “I think there’s so much an athlete can learn from other sports. Meeting the drivers, especially Kimi, was great. From the outside you only see the race on TV, but behind it there’s an immense amount of work going on. It was impressive to see how much effort and preparation go into competing at that level.”

skip past newsletter promotionFree newsletter | Every weekday

Sign up to Football Daily

Kick off your evenings with the Guardian’s take on the world of football

after newsletter promotion

Maduka Okoye enjoyed his visit to the British Grand Prix where he presented Kimi Antonelli with his pole position award after qualifying. Photograph: David Davies/PA

Udinese enter the Serie A season with stability and ambition and, in Friuli, that means looking towards Europe. “Everything is possible,” Okoye says. “But I think we should talk about that again in February or March. First we have to get the basics right and take it game by game. Then we’ll see where we are. We certainly have the quality, the players, an excellent staff, and a solid club behind us. Udinese is a club where a player can really grow and make that leap in quality.

“For me, Serie A remains one of the best leagues in the world and I’m grateful to be part of it. The higher the level of the league, the happier and prouder I am to play in it. We’re working hard and can’t wait to compete against the best.”

There is also unfinished business with Nigeria. Watching the World Cup from his living room was far from ideal. “Obviously it would have been better to be part of it, but unfortunately we didn’t qualify,” Okoye acknowledges. “We’ll try again for the next World Cup. I still enjoyed watching it from the outside; I supported Germany, hoping they’d go a bit further. Now we look to the future, and I really hope to be there at the next edition.”

As football continues to evolve into a convergence of sport, entertainment and global culture, figures such as Okoye offer a compelling blueprint for the modern athlete. He is a player capable of sitting in the front row in Paris on Monday, studying a rival on screen on Wednesday, and commanding his penalty box on Sunday – all without losing his sporting identity.

“On a personal level, it hasn’t changed me at all. I’m still the exact same person,” Okoye says. “Of course, when it comes to business and my personal image, a lot of things have changed. Fortunately, I have a great team around me and we try to make the most of these opportunities. But I repeat: who I am hasn’t changed. It’s simply part of my professional journey.”

And what advice would Okoye offer a young footballer dreaming of putting on the gloves and following in his footsteps? The Udinese goalkeeper does not hesitate: “To work hard, believe in yourself, and have faith.”

When Maduka Okoye visited Paris fashion week for the Jean Paul Gaultier show, taking his seat in the…

[9
85,46,105
post-579661","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-il","tag-israel","tag-sports
["GET
