The Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa on Sunday denied allegations of malpractice, after relatives of a soldier recently injured in Lebanon accused the hospital\u2019s Arab staff of mistreating their loved one.<\/p>\n

The accusations were quickly echoed by far-right politicians, while Arab MKs hit back, saying the incident was another example of widespread racism against Arab-Israelis who are deeply integrated in Israel\u2019s health care system.<\/p>\n

One of the accusers, Yehoshua Shani, chairman of the right-wing Gvura Forum for families of soldiers killed fighting in Gaza and father of the late Cpt. Ori Mordechay Shani<\/a>, is the uncle of one of four soldiers who were seriously wounded<\/a> last week after being hit by an explosive device in the southern Lebanon town of Majdal Zoun.<\/p>\n

Shani took to X on Sunday to accuse the hospital\u2019s night-shift nursing staff, which he described as \u201cArabic-speakers,\u201d of depriving his nephew, Eitan, of water and turning him over in bed \u201clike a sardine,\u201d allegedly slamming his head into the bed.<\/p>\n

According to Shani, Eitan had been sedated and on a ventilator until Saturday. That night, hospital staff asked family members to leave, as is customary in intensive care units.<\/p>\n

But Shani portrayed the routine measure as alarming because the soldiers were left in the care solely of Arabic-speaking medical workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a certain point, all the families were removed from the department, and the doors were locked,\u201d Shani recounted. \u201cYou need to understand the situation: Four seriously injured IDF soldiers, who had just returned from combat in Lebanon, are left alone behind locked doors, without their family members, while the entire staff on shift speaks Arabic.\u201d<\/p>\n

David Chesterman, the brother of the same wounded soldier, made similar allegations on Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt night, a new shift arrived at the unit, all of them Arabic-speakers,\u201d Chesterman wrote in a series of pictures of hospital equipment. \u201cThey took all the families out and locked the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chesterman said that after staff refused to allow the family to enter his brother\u2019s hospital room, he forced his way in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI broke down the door to make sure he was okay. He wasn\u2019t. He begged for water and no one was around,\u201d Chesterman claimed. \u201cHe whispered to me that they had brutally turned him over in bed \u2018like a sardine,\u2019 his head was slammed against the bed and no one cared.\u201d<\/p>\n

The accusations were quickly seized upon by far-right and populist politicians.<\/p>\n

Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the Israel Defense Forces to investigate the incident in coordination with all relevant parties.<\/p>\n

\u201cI view with great seriousness the testimonies that have been published regarding the behavior toward wounded IDF soldiers in the hospital,\u201d Katz said. \u201cThe heroic IDF soldiers who were injured while defending the State of Israel deserve the best and most dedicated care and respectful treatment for themselves and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have instructed the IDF to immediately and thoroughly examine all the allegations that have been raised with the hospital and the relevant parties,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir also condemned the alleged mistreatment and called for an immediate investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the disturbing testimonies coming from Rambam hospital are true, this is a grave scandal that should trouble every citizen in Israel,\u201d Ben Gvir wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese testimonies demand an immediate, thorough, and un-whitewashed investigation, including an examination of whether in some cases this constitutes harassment on a nationalist basis,\u201d which is classified by Israeli security bodies as terrorism, he said.<\/p>\n

Rambam, for its part, rejected the allegations following its own review of the incident, writing in a statement that \u201call patients, and certainly IDF soldiers, receive high-quality, professional care from a skilled and experienced medical team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take every allegation with the utmost seriousness and thoroughly investigate complaints of this kind. After reviewing the incident, we reject the claims that the patient was treated inappropriately,\u201d the hospital concluded.<\/p>\n

Dangerous blood libel<\/p>\n

The hospital\u2019s response, however, prompted criticism from some of its own Arab staff members, who told the Haaretz daily they were disappointed it had not publicly defended them against what they viewed as broader accusations against Arab medical workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, this is an attack on all Arab medical staff,\u201d one medical professional was quoted as saying. \u201cIf there isn\u2019t unequivocal, clear and public support even from the hospital, it\u2019s insulting and disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rambam Director General Dr. Michal Mekel reportedly sought to reassure employees internally, sending an email to staff condemning \u201cany attempt to generalize or divide staff members on the basis of language, origin or identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Arab employees maintained that the absence of a similar public statement was a source of frustration.<\/p>\n

However, on Monday,\u00a0Prof. Hagai Levine, the head of the Israeli Association of Public Health Physicians, condemned the accusations against Rambam\u2019s medical staff in a public statement, labeling them as \u201cdangerous blood libel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe false accusations against Rambam hospital are undermining the entire healthcare system,\u201d Levine said. \u201cLies born on social media about the treatment provided at Rambam are not merely \u2018fake news\u2019 \u2014 they are a dangerous blood libel aimed at dismantling from within the only system that still functions as an island of sanity and equality in Israel.<\/p>\n

Levine argued that when politicians make baseless accusations against hospitals and their Arab staffers, \u201cthey are not only harming Arab medical staff \u2014 they are harming every patient, Jewish or Arab, who walks through the hospital doors. Fringe elements who fan these flames for political gain are committing a disgraceful act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael\u2019s healthcare workers will not stand idly by. The teams at Rambam \u2014 Jews and Arabs \u2014 have saved and will continue to save lives, including under fire. The health of all of us depends on this trust. Together, we will rebuild,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

The controversy also drew a response from Ayman Odeh, head of the mostly Arab Hadash-Ta\u2019al party, who voiced support for Rambam\u2019s staff and sharply criticized Katz and Ben Gvir over their comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cRambam hospital in Haifa, my city, treats human beings without the question of who they are or what their faith is being a condition for treating them,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no wonder that Katz and Ben Gvir, two wretched clowns who have failed time and again in everything they\u2019ve done in their lives, are now trying to strike precisely at what this hospital represents: professionalism instead of incitement, partnership instead of racism, and humanity instead of barbarism,\u201d Odeh added.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour work, your professionalism, and the partnership you represent are the best answer for every Kahanist,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

MK Ahmad Tibi of the Ta\u2019al party, who is a gynecologist by profession, shared a post recounting how a woman had refused to have him deliver her baby when he worked at Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were always racists and there was always a solution. Be a human being,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
