The reactions following celebrity blogger Perez Hilton\u2019s distressing livestream and subsequent hospitalization have been varied across the board, and Jared Padalecki is the latest in the crossfire.<\/p>\n
Padalecki, 44, best known for his starring role in Supernatural and more recently The Boys, wrote a warm, lyrical tweet after news of Hilton\u2019s incident. Padalecki has long campaigned for mental health awareness, and the post was not out of character for him.<\/p>\n
“Hey @PerezHilton. Just wanted to reach out and let you know that you\u2019re in my thoughts. This ‘being human\u2019 is a strange thing. Exhilarating. Exhausting. Fast. Slow. Wonderful\u2026 and\u2026 at times\u2026 awful. I hope you are trying as best as you can to be kind to yourself right now. Please surround yourself with the love and support that all humans deserve,” he wrote in the now deleted tweet.<\/p>\n
The backlash was swift. Padalecki deleted the post and issued a brief initial apology<\/a> that said, \u201cI didn\u2019t know. It\u2019s been brought to my attention. I\u2019m sorry\u201d, before following up with a longer explanation on Sunday.<\/p>\n “I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about his past,” he wrote.<\/a> “I had heard of him. Obviously. I had heard that he hadn’t exactly ‘been kind’ to me in the past. So, my thought is always to give grace and forgiveness to those who may have tried to ‘harm’ you\u2026 in my experience, it usually works out better than holding a grudge or wishing punishment on someone else. On my life, I have never in my life, not once, looked him up or gone to one of his sites. I simply thought he was a ‘tabloid’ type of sensationalist journalist. I DO NOT stand for, or support, ANY of the actions I just now found out that he has committed. Full stop. He has spoken publicly<\/a> about seeking treatment for suicidal ideation during his time on the massively popular Supernatural, and has consistently used his platform to reduce stigma around mental health struggles. <\/p>\n Hilton (real name Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr), the subject of Padalecki\u2019s tweets, built one of the most trafficked celebrity gossip platforms of the 2000s internet era on a foundation that many of its subjects described as cruel, and the public pointing out of this apparent congruence was what Padalecki had to contend with. <\/p>\n Mila Kunis said in 2018<\/a> that he was “the first person that created ugly news, that literally just spread filth,” adding that it \u201callowed people to be mean.\u201d<\/p>\n He consistently drummed up speculation <\/a>about LGBTQ celebrities before they had come out themselves, for example. In 2010, Hilton posted a picture<\/a> of the then 17 year old Cyrus getting out of a car, with some parts pixelated, implying the child star was not fully clothed. He later took it down after controversy. <\/p>\n In his 2020 memoir TMI: My Life in Scandal, Hilton expressed regrets for the behavior which catapulted him into the limelight. <\/p>\n “I have a ton of regrets, particularly because I now see that I never needed to be so mean or cruel,” he wrote.<\/a> \u201cOne of the many things I regret is that I hurt so many people by giving them nasty nicknames, and above all that I was unkind to the children of celebrities.\u201d<\/p>\n “I also regret that I thought it was OK to out celebrities. That is something I no longer believe.”<\/p>\n The August incident is also not Hilton\u2019s first health crisis this year. In March, following recovery from a 21-day hospitalization, he posted a video<\/a> apologising for past behaviour and saying he had found God. Hilton said he had been brought up Catholic but was \u201cnever a believer\u201d until now.<\/p>\n “It was real and this has been life-changing. I\u2019m so grateful. I\u2019m excited to start taking the kids to church every week. And to just know that God is real. \u2026 I don\u2019t have to hope to believe. I know now,\u201d he said amidst tears.<\/p>\n Celebrity Reactions to Perez Hilton\u2019s Hospitalization Have Been Varied<\/p>\n The reaction to Hilton\u2019s hospitalization has divided celebrity social media in ways uncomfortable to map cleanly onto a moral grid. Celebrity culture has and has not come a long way since Hilton\u2019s heyday, and the question of publicly forgiving seemingly repentant, well-known figures whose actions have caused very real harm, is a complex one. <\/p>\n Ireland Baldwin, whose response captured the gamut more articulately than most, posted to Instagram Stories<\/a> on August 5 calling Hilton a “despicable human being” for \u201chumilating\u201d her family and sexualizing her as a child, while simultaneously stating his children did not deserve this and hoping he gets the help he needs.<\/p>\n Hilton\u2019s family confirmed publicly that he is in serious but stable condition, has experienced blood loss, and will require surgery.<\/a><\/p>\n If Perez Hilton\u2019s story is relevant to you or someone you know who is struggling, help is available.
