Recent rulings raise big questions about social media companies\u2019 responsibility to their youngest users. Meanwhile, more key executives have jumped ship from Google<\/a> as it battles OpenAI<\/a> and Anthropic<\/a> in the race for AI dominance, and Meta\u2019s smart glasses face a fearsome backlash. The pressure on social media giants including Meta is mounting, as courts work through a growing pile of cases and deliver devastating, expensive rulings, one after another. Meta\u2019s repeated losses underscore how serious the child safety crisis<\/a> has become<\/a> for social media companies and may force them to change how they operate to avoid further costly legal exposure.<\/p>\n

The latest blow came last week, after a New Mexico court hit Meta with an order to pay $567m<\/a> into a teen mental health fund to remediate the harm its platforms have caused children. The penalty adds to the $375m fine<\/a> already on the court\u2019s books after a jury determined in March that Meta negligently permitted damage to children\u2019s mental health and hid what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms. In a Los Angeles court, also in March, Meta was held liable<\/a> for $4.2m in damages for designing platforms that addict and hurt children. The California case paved the way for hundreds of plaintiffs who have filed similar cases, which could cost Meta billions and force major changes to its products.<\/p>\n

But New Mexico is just the latest of many headaches in store for social media companies including Meta. The company is facing 42 lawsuits filed by states across the US<\/a>, plus thousands more, along with YouTube, TikTok<\/a> and Snap, brought by state attorneys general, school districts and individual families.<\/p>\n

At the center of the battle is the growing concern that social media companies harm its youngest users with addictive<\/a> features that propel issues<\/a> such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The plaintiffs\u2019 goal is to hold companies accountable and enjoin them to change their products<\/a> \u2013 everything from stricter age verification to usage limits and safety banners promoting protection features.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a cautionary tale of hubris,\u201d said Karen North, a professor at University of Southern California who studies social media. Tech companies \u201cseemed to believe they had safe harbor, and this wasn\u2019t their problem\u201d.<\/p>\n

Government-ordered remedies are a partial fix at best. For example, the New Mexico court ordered Meta<\/a> to improve its age verification tools, which use artificial intelligence to analyze signals such as the ages of users\u2019 friends and the content users post and consume. It also asked Meta to develop a prediction model that could determine if users were under the age of 13. These measures will probably flag more underage users for better protection.<\/p>\n

But broadly, AI has a track record of misprofiling people<\/a>, which will likely leave some underage users undetected. Meanwhile, inadequate age verification checks have left Australia\u2019s ban<\/a> on social media for children under 16 largely ineffective, according to recent research<\/a>. Only a small percentage of those surveyed were required to provide official ID, and a significant portion said they bypassed the restrictions by using a fake account or a VPN.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, tech companies are already skirting some trials through private settlements. Last week, TikTok settled three lawsuits from young people over claims its app harmed their mental health. Last month, a lawsuit filed against Meta in Los Angeles was dropped<\/a> after the plaintiff settled with YouTube, TikTok and Snap. In June, companies reached a settlement<\/a> with a Kentucky school district that sued over platforms\u2019 addictive designs that caused harm.<\/p>\n

Children\u2019s safety on social media is no longer a peripheral issue for tech giants. It\u2019s a growing risk to companies\u2019 bottom lines. And the outcome of a federal case against Meta, brought by attorneys general from 29 states set for trial later this month in Oakland, California, could set the tone (and price) for the thousands of cases ahead.<\/p>\n

But, as North says, child safety is likely the tip of the iceberg. \u201cAt what point do they decide you don\u2019t have to be a child to be harmed?\u201d It starts with \u201cyoung people and then vulnerable people and then all people\u201d.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s AI division is facing an internal leadership shuffle amid a heated external talent war, as frontier labs race to build the most capable large language models and capture the biggest market share.<\/p>\n

News broke last week that Google\u2019s DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, is stepping down<\/a> from day-to-day leadership of the famed AI unit. He will serve as the chair of DeepMind, chief scientist for Google parent Alphabet, and continue as the CEO of Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery company that spun off from Google. Meanwhile, Google\u2019s current chief scientist, Jeff Dean, a 27-year-veteran, and three colleagues are leaving to launch Discovery Loop, a startup the tech giant is backing. The news caused the company\u2019s stock to drop 4%, and it had yet to rebound as of this newsletter.<\/p>\n

The executive shakeup follows the exits of other key leaders, several of whom have jumped to competitors in the last year, and reports of poor morale and delayed releases<\/a> \u2013 Gemini 3.5 Pro is months late and counting<\/a>. With executives exiting and releases delayed, the pressure to keep pace is only mounting, especially as Google continues to trail OpenAI in the AI race.<\/p>\n

ChatGPT is still decidedly in the lead, with 1.11 billion monthly users as of May, according to data from the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. While Gemini has steadily started to close that gap, with help from a strong Android user base and integrations across Google\u2019s ecosystem, it lags behind with 662 million monthly users in the same month. Claude, meanwhile, has seen a spike in growth<\/a> this year but trails both at 245 million monthly users, though Anthropic has captured<\/a> more business customers and higher margins<\/a> than OpenAI by focusing its bot on coding and technical tasks.<\/p>\n

Still, while Google\u2019s exits may be among the most senior and seemingly consequential, they\u2019re part of a broader turnover happening across AI labs as competition for a minuscule pool of top talent intensifies<\/a>. Which labs can hold on to those major players will shape who leads the AI race in the future.<\/p>\n
