Later in the day, Melbourne oncologist Michael Lee works out at home, jogging on his running machine as he watches TV at night.<\/p>\n<p>All three are committed to regular exercise and to promoting it to patients to enhance their treatment and recovery, and reduce the risk of cancer coming back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell my patients that exercise is as important as the drug therapy you get in the clinic,\u201d says Associate Professor Itchins, a lung cancer specialist with Sydney\u2019s Chris O\u2019Brien Lifehouse and Royal North Shore Hospital.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Malinda Itchins at the Chris O\u2019Brien Lifehouse gym.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e62da9db3054e54b192cd0006b408a66d440811c.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Malinda Itchins at the Chris O\u2019Brien Lifehouse gym.Audrey Richardson<\/p>\n<p>Itchins manages two to three HIIT classes at the gym each week, along with running. She advises her patients to include both aerobic exercise and resistance training, often referring them to an exercise physiologist for expert help.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/lifestyle\/health-and-wellness\/the-easy-protein-swap-that-could-help-you-live-longer-20260403-p5zl80.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Switching up the protein added to your favourite meals can have substantial health benefits.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/d4e575aca15fa21b0426f371d082e92218992077.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s good data that exercise helps prevent recurrence, but it also helps with fatigue and the side effects of treatment, including muscle loss, and it helps with sleep quality and anxiety,\u201d Itchins says. \u201cIt gives a sense of purpose and control and helps with mental resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith exercise, you\u2019re more likely to respond to therapies, have less chance of infection and better recovery, and it helps mitigate many treatment side effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although more oncologists and cancer nurses are promoting exercise to patients, it\u2019s still not the norm, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Regular exercise reduces the chances of developing aggressive prostate cancer\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Like Itchins, Professor Sweeney, a prostate cancer specialist, varies his workouts, sometimes running or doing 15 minutes of strength training with dumbbells at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many different versions of prostate cancer, and we know that regular exercise reduces the chances of developing aggressive prostate cancer or of prostate cancer recurring,\u201d says Sweeney, director of Adelaide\u2019s South Australian immunoGENomics Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving seen so many patients with these health issues, I try to practise what I preach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to choose the right moment to bring up exercise with patients because there\u2019s a lot to take in when they\u2019re first diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s often when a patient says \u2018what can I do?\u2019 that you explain about not smoking, that alcohol is a carcinogen and that, along with avoiding highly processed food and eating more fruit and vegetables, exercise can help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Melbourne-based Michael Lee spends a lot of time on his treadmill. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b42276bcc4e6789d9daeb3aefc6195179b23aeea.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Melbourne-based Michael Lee spends a lot of time on his treadmill. Ruby Alexander<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell patients, \u2018Every treatment I throw at you will make you tired, but with exercise you\u2019ll maintain muscle strength, and tolerate treatment better,\u2019\u201d says Dr Lee, of Melbourne\u2019s Cabrini Health, whose speciality is cancers of the gastro-intestinal tract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI frame it as, \u2018You need exercise to be fit for treatment and to reduce the risk of it coming back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s with colon cancer, along with breast cancer, that the evidence is strongest for a preventive effect from exercise, he says, referring to the CHALLENGE Trial. <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2025\/06\/02\/structured-exercise-reduces-colon-cancer-recurrence-risk.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sydney.edu.au\/news-opinion\/news\/2025\/06\/02\/structured-exercise-reduces-colon-cancer-recurrence-risk.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The study, published last year<\/a>, found that with people treated for colon cancer, a structured exercise program reduced the risk of cancer recurring by 28 per cent and reduced the risk of death by 37 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>How does exercise make us more resilient to cancer?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt creates an environment that makes it harder for cancer to thrive,\u201d says Robert Newton, Professor of Exercise Medicine at Edith Cowan University\u2019s <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.exercisemedicine.org.au\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Exercise Medicine Research Institute<\/a> and author of <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/myexercisemedicine.net\/mem-4-cancer-book\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">My Exercise Medicine for Cancer<\/a>, a new book detailing how exercise can help suppress cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbanetimes.com.au\/lifestyle\/health-and-wellness\/this-surgery-could-slash-the-risk-of-the-deadliest-female-cancer-by-almost-80-percent-20260217-p5o2z5.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alexandra Armstrong had her Fallopian tubes removed last year.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1e71608417dd53d8855f26a1ce270a1be83d7861.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer doesn\u2019t grow in isolation. It exists in an environment shaped by how much oxygen is available, by inflammation, immune activity, blood flow, metabolism, and hormonal signalling. Structured, consistent exercise can shift that environment in a less cancer-friendly direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can increase oxygen to the body\u2019s cells, helping to slow cancer down and reduce the risk of it spreading. It helps regulate hormones that can drive cancers, and it helps mobilise immune cells capable of recognising and destroying abnormal cells.
