{"id":582944,"date":"2026-08-13T00:36:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T00:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/582944\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T00:36:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T00:36:29","slug":"reef-relief-how-a-late-summer-monsoon-helped-cool-the-great-barrier-reef-at-just-the-right-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/582944\/","title":{"rendered":"Reef relief: how a late summer monsoon helped cool the Great Barrier Reef at just the right time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s Great Barrier Reef is a true natural wonder: a unique and diverse underwater seascape the size of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/monitoring-and-discovery\/monitoring-great-barrier-reef\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, cycles of disturbance and recovery threaten to turn its colourful coral gardens into algal-dominated seascapes \u2013 then back again. And these cycles are becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/information-centre\/news-and-stories\/great-barrier-reef-more-volatile-sharp-declines-coral-cover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more volatile<\/a> as our world warms.<\/p>\n<p>At the Australian Institute of Marine Science, we\u2019ve been documenting these changes for the past four decades through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/monitoring-and-discovery\/monitoring-great-barrier-reef\/long-term-monitoring-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Long-Term Monitoring Program<\/a>. This is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/monitoring-and-discovery\/monitoring-great-barrier-reef\/long-term-monitoring-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">longest records<\/a> of continuous coral reef data in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Concerningly, we\u2019ve watched the health of the Great Barrier Reef begin to fluctuate dramatically over the past 15 years. The 2024 mass coral bleaching \u2013 where a record-breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/worlds-biggest-coral-survey-confirms-sharp-decline-in-great-barrier-reef-after-heatwave-260563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marine heatwave<\/a> bleached coral reefs from the Caribbean to the Indian and Pacific Oceans \u2013 was particularly destructive. It caused the largest single-year decline in coral ever measured in two regions.<\/p>\n<p>However, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/monitoring-great-barrier-reef\/gbr-condition-summary-2025-26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">latest report<\/a> reveals some promising signs of recovery.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A marine scientist conducts a manta tow and surveys coral reefs.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/file-20260807-50-11pfai.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Scientists have been monitoring the health of the Great Barrier Reef for four decades.<br \/>\n              \u00a9 AIMS | LTMP, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC-ND<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In hot water<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the Great Barrier Reef endured its sixth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/coral-bleaching\/coral-bleaching-events\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coral bleaching<\/a> since 2016 \u2013 one of only two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/coral-bleaching\/coral-bleaching-events\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back-to-back bleachings<\/a> in the reef\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>However, our latest survey data shows the 2025 bleaching was smaller and less severe than in 2024. This means substantially less coral died, showing not all periods of bleaching have the same outcome. A heatwave\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1146\/annurev-marine-032223-024511\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intensity and duration<\/a> determines whether corals die or survive. If corals get relief from the heat, they can regain their symbiotic algae and survive.<\/p>\n<p>On the Great Barrier Reef, sea surface temperatures generally peak between <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-024-07672-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January and March<\/a>. During these summer months, marine heatwaves can <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/massive-marine-heatwave-caused-caribbean-coral-reefs-to-collapse-much-faster-than-predicted-new-research-281478\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increase the risk<\/a> of coral bleaching. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.pocean.2015.12.014\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marine heatwaves<\/a> occur if ocean temperatures remain unusually warm for the location and time of year for at least five consecutive days.<\/p>\n<p>In spring 2025, a marine heatwave swept across the reef, raising ocean temperatures by <a href=\"https:\/\/oceancurrent.aodn.org.au\/product.php?product=daily.SST_ANOM&amp;region=NE&amp;date=20251001120000&amp;rtype=SR&amp;movie=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">up to 1.5\u00b0C<\/a>. According to the Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s climate trends, December 2025 was the reef\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/cgi-bin\/climate\/change\/timeseries.cgi?graph=sst&amp;area=GBR&amp;season=12&amp;ave_yr=0&amp;ave_period=6190\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hottest December<\/a> on record since 1900. This followed the devastating 2024 mass coral bleaching. <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gbrmpa.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-02\/Reef%20Authority-Factsheet-Coral%20Cover.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coral cover<\/a> refers to how much of the reef surface is covered in live hard coral, compared with algae, sand and other organisms. It\u2019s one indicator of how healthy a reef is.<\/p>\n<p>In good news, our latest report suggests coral cover increased slightly in some parts of the reef from 2025 to 2026. In the northern region (Cape York to Cooktown), coral cover rose from 30% to 35.1%. This figure increased from 28.6% to 31.6% in the central region (Cooktown to Proserpine). This puts both regions above the long-term average of coral cover. However, coral cover in the reef\u2019s southern region (Proserpine to Gladstone) remained below the long-term average, decreasing slightly from 26.9% to 26.4%.<\/p>\n<p>            <a role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Zoomable image\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/752827\/original\/file-20260807-50-kyy2yr.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three line graphs showing trends in average hard coral cover.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/file-20260807-50-kyy2yr.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Trends in average coral cover (blue line) for the northern, central, and southern Great Barrier Reef based on manta tow surveys.<br \/>\n              \u00a9 AIMS | LTMP, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC-ND<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, what is driving this?<\/p>\n<p>In early 2026, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/monitoring-great-barrier-reef\/gbr-condition-summary-2025-26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">noticed signs<\/a> of regional coral bleaching in the northern and central Great Barrier Reef. But a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/tropical-note\/archive\/20260303.archive.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">monsoon<\/a> soon arrived, bringing widespread cloud and rainy weather, helping to cool the reef at just the right time.<\/p>\n<p>Australian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/resources\/learn-and-explore\/climate-knowledge-centre\/climate-factors\/monsoon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">monsoon activity<\/a> typically coincides with the northern wet season, from October to April. During an active monsoon, clouds, rain and winds <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/wcd-7-109-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help cool<\/a> the surface of the ocean. Breaking waves and turbulence then mix hotter surface waters with deeper, cooler waters. Global forecast systems can now predict ocean temperatures weeks to months in advance, providing early warnings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/ocean\/long-range-forecasts\/?variable=mh_cat&amp;region=AUS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marine heatwaves<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/ocean\/long-range-forecasts\/?variable=dhm&amp;region=AUS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coral bleaching<\/a> risks around Australia. <\/p>\n<p>But the reef faces many urgent and increasing pressures. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/coral-bleaching\/coral-bleaching-events\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recent bleaching<\/a> means corals are particularly vulnerable to record-breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/climatereanalyzer.org\/clim\/sst_daily\/?dm_id=world2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global ocean temperatures<\/a> and a predicted strong El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/prickly-starfish-and-urchins-are-decimating-australias-reefs-but-we-could-find-ways-to-protect-them-285144\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crown-of-thorns starfish<\/a> are one well documented threat to the reef\u2019s corals. Since the 1960s, there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrierreef.org\/news\/news\/detecting-crown-of-thorns-starfish-outbreaks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four waves<\/a> of crown-of-thorns outbreaks, with a fifth wave currently emerging in the far north. And these coral-eating starfish will move <a href=\"https:\/\/outlookreport.gbrmpa.gov.au\/values\/3-ecosystem-health\/36-outbreaks-disease-introduced-species-and-pest-species\/362-outbreaks-crown-thorns-starfish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">further south<\/a> in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The reef was also hit by two tropical cyclones \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/cyclone\/history\/Koji_2026.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Koji<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/news-and-media\/severe-tropical-cyclone-narelles-journey-across-northern-australia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Narelle<\/a> \u2013 between January and March 2026. Cyclones have some cooling effect, but may whip up enormous waves that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/information-centre\/news-and-stories\/cyclones-can-damage-even-distant-reefs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">destroy coral<\/a> in their path.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Barrier Reef has again shown its remarkable ability to recover. But we can\u2019t take this for granted. Instead, we must urgently act to reduce our <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/worlds-biggest-coral-survey-confirms-sharp-decline-in-great-barrier-reef-after-heatwave-260563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon emissions<\/a> and minimise climate change. Developing <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/if-we-can-put-a-man-on-the-moon-we-can-save-the-great-barrier-reef-121052\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">science interventions<\/a> offers a pathway to build the reef\u2019s resilience and help it survive a warming future.
