{"id":583416,"date":"2026-08-13T11:22:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T11:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/583416\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T11:22:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T11:22:09","slug":"new-private-perceptor-probes-will-keep-an-eye-on-satellites-high-above-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/583416\/","title":{"rendered":"New private &#8216;Perceptor&#8217; probes will keep an eye on satellites high above Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-ea752dce-95a7-11f1-aa2d-1dc5479848d6\">Satellites high above Earth may soon have fewer places to hide.<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco-based company Astranis announced today (Aug. 13) that it&#8217;s developing a line of spacecraft called Perceptor, which will keep an eye on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> activity in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geostationary orbit<\/a> (GEO).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ea752dce-95a7-11f1-aa2d-1dc5479848d6-2\">GEO lies 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth, an altitude at which orbital speed matches our planet&#8217;s rotational velocity. It&#8217;s therefore a popular destination for communications, weather and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-launch-nrol-172-spy-satellite-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-launch-nrol-172-spy-satellite-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-falcon-9-rocket-launch-nrol-172-spy-satellite-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reconnaissance spacecraft<\/a> \u2014 and, increasingly, an arena for off-Earth spying, as space powers seek to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/04\/suspect-in-space-analysis-finds-75-unusual-moves-by-chinese-satellites-in-nearly-10-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/04\/suspect-in-space-analysis-finds-75-unusual-moves-by-chinese-satellites-in-nearly-10-years\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">keep tabs on their competitors&#8217; activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-5ee4f3b0-95ad-11f1-92db-37c91ddb3b5b\">Astranis currently operates five satellites in this distant orbital realm, which &#8220;support the U.S. military, bring connectivity to remote areas and provide critical capabilities like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS<\/a>,&#8221; according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"http:\/\/astranis.com\/spacecraft\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"http:\/\/astranis.com\/spacecraft\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the company&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It plans to leverage and extend this expertise with Perceptor, helping the U.S. government and other potential customers learn more about what&#8217;s happening high above our heads. The new line will be based on Astranis&#8217; &#8220;MicroGEO&#8221; satellite platform, so named because it&#8217;s smaller than typical GEO craft.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Astranis provides mission-critical infrastructure for strategic higher orbits. (Image credit: Astranis)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cb5b0208-95b4-11f1-bd89-7744031abd44\">Perceptor spacecraft will sport a variety of sensors, which will allow them to take the measure of other satellites and their broader GEO surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Multi-angle flybys can assess spacecraft capabilities, help troubleshoot anomalies on friendly spacecraft, and provide additional eyes in a domain where awareness has historically been limited,&#8221; Astranis&#8217; statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>Each Perceptor will also be highly maneuverable, using electric propulsion &#8220;to traverse the full GEO arc, repositioning dozens of times over its mission lifetime,&#8221; company representatives added.<\/p>\n<p>The statement does not provide a target timeline for the first Perceptor missions. But the need for such a capability already exists, as the activities of certain Russian and Chinese satellites show.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, for example, officials with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Space Force<\/a> announced that two Russian spacecraft <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-spacecraft-stalking-us-spy-satellite-space-force.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-spacecraft-stalking-us-spy-satellite-space-force.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-spacecraft-stalking-us-spy-satellite-space-force.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">got within 100 miles<\/a> (160 kilometers) of an American spy satellite, behavior the branch&#8217;s then-chief described as &#8220;unusual and disturbing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And, in 2023, experts announced that China&#8217;s TJS-3 GEO spacecraft had <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/chinese-spacecraft-tjs-3-inspecting-us-satellites\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/chinese-spacecraft-tjs-3-inspecting-us-satellites\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/chinese-spacecraft-tjs-3-inspecting-us-satellites\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taken close looks<\/a> at USA 233 and USA 298, both of which are thought to be Space Force spy satellites.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Satellites high above Earth may soon have fewer places to hide.
