The Justice Department is investigating venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz for potential antitrust violations, Bloomberg reported Monday, a rare instance of the Trump administration looking into a political ally as billionaire cofounder Marc Andreessen has emerged as a key adviser and financial supporter for President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

The DOJ has been investigating Andreessen Horowitz for nearly a year, Bloomberg reports<\/a> citing anonymous sources, based on concerns about potential conflicts involving board members on competing AI firms.<\/p>\n Partners at Andreessen Horowitz serve on boards of multiple AI companies that the venture capital firm has stakes in\u2014the companies Databricks Inc. and Fivetran Inc.\u2014which could run afoul of antitrust laws<\/a> that prohibit individuals or entities from serving on boards of competing companies.<\/p>\n It\u2019s still unclear whether the probe could result in any consequences, with Bloomberg noting such probes typically result in officials being forced to resign from the boards at issue.<\/p>\n The DOJ\u2019s willingness to go after Andreessen Horowitz is notable given the firm and its founders\u2019 close relationship with the Trump White House, with Bloomberg previously describing<\/a> the firm as being a \u201csounding board\u201d for the administration and serving as the White House\u2019s \u201cfirst outside call\u201d on issues regarding AI policy.<\/p>\n Andreessen has also been a standout Trump donor and ally, getting appointed to multiple advisory boards through the administration and saying<\/a> he spent \u201chalf\u201d his time after the 2024 election advising Trump at the president\u2019s Mar-a-Lago estate.<\/p>\n Andreessen Horowitz has not yet responded to a request for comment, while the DOJ did not confirm nor deny the probe, but said only that the agency \u201cwill continue to prioritize affordability for all Americans across our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n Forbes Valuation<\/p>\n Forbes values Andreessen\u2019s net worth<\/a> at $1.9 billion as of Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n Why Is Andreessen Horowitz Under Investigation?<\/p>\n According to Bloomberg, DOJ investigators have been concerned about Andreessen Horowitz cofounder Ben Horowitz serving on Databricks\u2019 board, while Martin Casado, a partner at the firm, serves on Fivetran\u2019s board. Casado was also on the board of dtb labs, which Fivetran acquired in June. Federal antitrust law prohibits what\u2019s known as \u201cinterlocking directorates,\u201d which means having the same person on multiple competing boards. The provision<\/a> specifically states, \u201cNo person shall, at the same time, serve as a director or officer in any two corporations\u201d that are engaged in commerce with each other or are \u201ccompetitors\u201d that could violate antitrust laws if they worked with each other. There are some exceptions, such as for banks and companies earning less than $10 million in total capital and profits. Since the text of the law only specifies no \u201cperson\u201d can serve on multiple competing boards, Bloomberg notes it\u2019s possible Andreessen Horowitz could try to challenge any penalty it could face. The firm could argue the law doesn\u2019t apply here, since multiple people are serving on the boards, even if they\u2019re from the same firm.<\/p>\n Andreessen Horowitz\u2019s Ties To Trump<\/p>\n Andreessen Horowitz endorsed<\/a> Trump in the 2024 election and its cofounders have also personally donated to funds supporting the president, citing his policies on AI and cryptocurrency, though Horowitz also gave money to former Vice President Kamala Harris. The firm has continued serving as a key adviser to the Trump White House on AI policy, with pro-AI regulation lobbyist Doug Calidas telling Bloomberg the firm is \u201cprobably the most powerful single company that I\u2019ve seen in recent years.\u201d Andreessen, previously a Democrat, shifted his allegiance to Trump ahead of the 2024 race, with ProPublica reporting<\/a> he donated more than $5 million to groups supporting Trump\u2019s 2024 candidacy. The billionaire advised Trump at Mar-a-Lago ahead of his inauguration and offered to help with Elon Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency, and has been appointed to give advice to the Pentagon<\/a> and Federal Reserve<\/a>, among other government roles. Andreessen Horowitz\u2019s political influence is set to ramp up further, with the New York Times reporting<\/a> in May the firm and its cofounders are so far the biggest donors in the November midterms, with $115.5 million in donations. While the firm\u2019s spending is largely centered on committees that advocate for candidates friendly to cryptocurrency and AI, the Times notes Andreessen and Horowitz have also so far given a combined $12 million this election cycle to Trump\u2019s MAGA Inc. super PAC.<\/p>\n Key Background<\/p>\n Bloomberg\u2019s reporting comes as Trump\u2019s DOJ has broadly been criticized for going after the president\u2019s enemies while showing leniency to his allies. The DOJ has opened probes into such Trump critics as Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey and former Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell, among numerous others, which have resulted in several indictments. At the same time, the administration has drawn scrutiny for dropping investigations for companies that are friendly to the president. SpaceX, led by onetime Trump adviser Musk, got out of a discrimination lawsuit<\/a> that the DOJ dropped in February 2025, for instance, while criminal probes against Boeing<\/a> and Abbott Laboratories<\/a> ended after those companies made hefty<\/a> donations<\/a> to Trump\u2019s inaugural fund.
